Searching a Zotero Library as though it were a database.

Can Zotero be used to search for specific terms across the entire library (across hundreds of pdfs in this case) and in specific sections of the article (e.g. title, abstract, and body)?

To give some context to this question, my research team is in the process of creating an extensive lit review for a particular substance that may have many therapeutic applications and have over 500 articles to sift through for relevance. If we could separate the ones that are directly addressing the pharmacology of this substance from those articles that only mention it in passing in some automated kind of way that would be perfect, as otherwise this will be a very laborious task. Specifically, we’d like to see 1. Is the substance mentioned in the title?, 2. Is it mentioned in the abstract?, and 3. How many times is it mentioned in the body? Is this kind of querying possible with Zotero?
  • You can use advanced/saved searches to run queries for Title, Abstract, and Attachment Content. There's no way to get a count of how many times something is mentioned in the body, though you could script that with the JavaScript API.

Note that not all metadata sources provide abstracts, which could be a limitation for those searches.
