Technical Specifications

We want to install Zotero on the lab machines across campus. Campus IT needs the following information:

Computer hardware requirements: (CPU, Memory, etc...)
Disk space requirements:
Does the vendor support the installation of their software using Microsoft Application Virtualization (APP-V) Sequencer? (Y/N)
  • The Firefox add-on or the Standalone version?

    Standalone version

But, then, which would be better on lab machines? These machines connect to network drives and when user logs off all data is cleared.
  • sorry, no one ever replied to this, not sure why, core devs would be in a better position to answer but in general.

    1. Minimal requirements are
    - 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    - 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
though >1.6GHz and 2+GB will make you happier
    Windows XP or higher
Mac OS X 10.6.3 or higher

    2. ~70MB plus space for data and files (most of this is xulrunner). This would be one advantage of the Firefox add-on if you have Firefox installed anyway - that takes ~10MB.

    3. I'm not sure, don't think it's been tested, but I don't see why it shouldn't work - though apparently APP-V doesn't work well with plugins for Office, so if you'd want to use that, that would be a problem

As for Standalone vs. Firefox add-on - there really isn't much of a difference in terms of functionality, but for Standalone to be useful you'd also want to install connectors for Chrome, Safari and Firefox (the latter being the full-fletched add-on) so that'd be extra effort.
It's also probably easier to batch install the add-on (and, as per above, it takes up much less space).
  • Would you kindly update the technical specification required/preferred for installing Zotero?

Computer hardware requirements: (CPU, Memory, etc...)
    Disk space requirements:
  • Thank you for your reply.
Based on the website you kindly forwarded, I'm afraid it does not include information on CPU, memory and disk space requirements. Does this mean that there was no update since adamsmith replied as follow in 2013?
    We are currently using
    -Windows10Pro (64bit), Corei7, Memory 16GB, Storage 512GB (SSD),
but still experiencing slow Zotero. Therefore, we are planning to purchase another device. Your support is very much appreciated.

  • Zotero should run fine on a modern computer with 16 GB of RAM and an SSD unless you're using a very large library. If you're experiencing slow performance, start a new thread and provide a Debug ID for an operation that's slow, and provide more details about the library (e.g., how many items).

I don't know where @adamsmith got the above requirements but we've never given official hardware requirements for Zotero.
  • Thank you very much for your further help.
I'll separately consult about our specific library in a new thread with Debug ID and more details.
