This is style dependent. If you are using the Word Plugin with a numbered style, like Nature, this should happen automatically. Just use use the multiple citation button when adding the in-text citations and you should get the number range result.

Getting [1]-[5] would be harder, not sure it's possible.
As adamsmith says, the [1]-[5] form is not supported by the current CSL processor. The new one will cover it though, when it's released. Here's the test fixture for it.
Thanks. .I am using IEEE style and i find IEEE uses [1]-[5] rather than [1-5]. Any suggestion how to fix it? I also do not see multiple citation button in the plug in.
One more query here. I am trying to use zotero also for my thesis and i am hoping it would help me a lot. I have divided my work in two different individual files. Can i create a single word file which will just be biblograghy for rest of my chapter files? It would be wonderful if someone can give some suggestions on how to do it.

I've just run a test (again) in Open Office, and find that IEEE will only produce the [1-5] form, and that no combination of changes to the CSL style will produce [1]-[5] on a multiple citation. So either you have stated it backwards, or we are talking at cross purposes.
Let's start with the multiple citations button. When you click the icon in the word processor to insert a citation, you will get a popup window that says "Add/Edit Citation". It will have a button at the bottom that says "Multiple Citations". Can you find that button?
Thanks.. i get the Multiple Citations. yes i understand IEEE citation produces [1-5]. I have seen in IEEE literature, normally the format is [1]-[5].I can get [1-5] but my desired format is [1]-[5]. I hope i got it clear now.

@krishmaniac - there may be some way to do this with master-documents etc. but its non-trivial and nothing I have ever done or seen mentioned here.
What you can do is to keep inserting references in all your chapters and then put them together in the end. Pressing the refresh button will update all reference numbers.
Inserting a bibliography will give you a bibliography for the whole dissertation.
IF the only place the format [number - number] appears in your document is multiple citations and IF you always want to convert these to [number]-[number] you could use a search and replace string (incorporated into a macro if you need to do it for multiple documents) to convert all the references at once to the form you want when you have finished your document. For advice on how to construct a search and replace string of the type you need see:
Same issue here. I have multiple word documents (thesis chapters) and I need to insert all in one bibliography list. ¿Is there a way to do this without mixing all documents in one?
