Cannot edit citations or add bibliography in Google docs (Mac, Firefox)

On Mac OS Big Sur, Firefox 85.0 (64-bit), I am able to insert citations using the Zotero tool in Google docs, but the citation appears as flat and uneditable via Zotero, and when I try to add a bibliography, I get the "You must insert a citation before performing this operation" message. (I get the same message if I hit "unlink citations.")
Any ideas? Thanks.
  • Are you saying this happens in a new Google Docs document? You insert a citation and click Add/Edit Bibliography and you get that error? Or is this just in a specific existing document?

If you click on an existing citation, do you get any sort of popup?
  • It occurs in a new Google document. I can add a citation, but can't edit it via Zotero (only as regular text in the document), and can't create a bibliography from the existing citation(s).
  • I've tried this is about five new documents, and each produces the same error.
  • Can you provide a Debug ID from the Zotero Connector for reloading the page, inserting a citation, and trying to insert a bibliography?
  • I was able to fix the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the Zotero connector. But then it started overwriting bibliography entries for some reason -- i.e., I successfully created two footnotes and then a bibliography, but when I then inserted another footnote, one of the bibliography references was replaced by the new one. Then I received an error message when I tried to edit/update the bibliography.
    Debug ID: 2113036361
  • Tried again by clearing out the document and redoing a few citations and a bibliography. Same problem with the references list omitting one item. Debug ID is D1889753549.

You should disable other extensions and see if the issues are fixed. If not, it might help to try testing in a new Firefox profile. If you still see the problem, what is the citation style that you are using? What are the exact steps to reproduce this problem in a new document and what is the result of those steps?
