No connection with Word 365 (Mac), Version 16.42

Zotero does not appear in Word. I have installed and re-installed Zotero. I have uploaded the Zotero.dotm file. I have updated Word. I have re-installed the Word extension in Zotero preferences. I have tried everything in the guides below, and I have read several forum posts. What can be wrong?

I did have Zotero installed a few years ago, but I have uninstalled it. I do not find it under broken add-ins.

Thanks for helping me,

Magnus

  • Did you try the manual installation steps? What is your Word Startup folder set to?
  • Thanks for trying to help,

Yes, I have tried manual installation steps. The startup folder is:
    /Users/Magnus/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/Användarinnehåll/Startup.localized

This is where Zotero placed the .dotm file, so it ought to be correct folder.

  • But in Word under Developer -> Word Add-ins you do not see Zotero.dotm?
  • Nope, I don't see it there even if it is in the folder.
  • Could you try creating a new macOS User Account and see whether the plugin appears there after reinstalling via Zotero Preferences?
  • Tried a new account on my Mac. Nothing changes. Thanks for trying to help me
  • If you open the Zotero.dotm file manually with Word does the Zotero tab appear?
  • Ok, so writing by opening the Zotero.dotm file is not the solution, but I don't really know what else to suggest to you. If your startup folder is set to the default location and Zotero.dotm is present, you should at the very least see Zotero.dotm under Word Add-Ins. You could try opening Word normally, going to Developer -> Word Add-ins and adding the Zotero.dotm file in the dialog manually (by using the "+" at the bottom of the dialog).
  • Problem solved! You wrote: “If your startup folder is set to the default location and Zotero.dotm is present, you should at the very least see Zotero.dotm under Word Add-Ins.” So, I checked the path set in Word>Preferences, and no path was set. The solution was just to set the path, and now it works just as it should. Thank you very much for your patience!
