MHRA and Chapters

Hello, I'm just wondering if there is a way to edit it so Zotero recognises where new chapters start in a word document and inserts a full reference for the first instance of a book (even if it has appeared in the previous chapter). I've managed to get it so my reference numbers restart but that was within word so not sure if it could be done by linking it to that somehow?

I don't code at all so I've got no idea what I'm doing but managed to edit the style to use Ibid for repeats of the same text using code someone else posted here.

Any help would be much appreciated.
  • No, there's no way to do that. Only way is to author separate chapters in separate documents.
  • Hi, wondering if there has been any update on this issue: Is there any way for Zotero to recognize the beginning of a new chapter and insert a full reference in the first instance of a book, even if it has appeared in a previous chapter?

To clarify: I'm not asking about restarting footnote numbers, I know that's an issue for Word settings and easily resolvable. My problem is that according to Chicago Manual of Style, each chapter should "reset" the full/short notes. In other words, a book cited in chapter 1 should not appear as an abbreviated footnote when cited for the first time in chapter 2. Is there any way of achieving this?

I've seen several threads that suggest keeping the chapters as separate files. But that's not an option in my case (and in many cases), because the chapters cross-reference each other (in Word), and the auto-numbering of everything (chapters, figures, TOC etc.) wouldn't work.
  • No update on this, no.
  • Thanks for the quick response. That's... really unfortunate, because this is the standard for most publishers in the humanities as far as I can tell. Most book manuscripts in these fields would require this. If there's any way to bring this topic into consideration for development, that'd be much appreciated.
