Citation text is not inserting

I am unable to add a citation in Word for Mac or Google Docs. I click "add citation", choose the article to be cited and only a superscript reference number appears without any other text. I tried restarting my computer and disabling and re-enabling the Zotero Chrome plug in. I would appreciate any help :)

    That just sounds like a numeric citation. It will correspond to an entry in your bibliography once you insert one.

    If you don't want numeric citations, pick a different citation style.

    I followed a tutorial online and that seemed to cause the trouble I was having. Thank you for your help, your advice worked. Much appreciated!
