Zotero library view indicates that some item have notes when they do not

If I look at my library, and sort by Note indicator (yellow square icon), I see 36 items with at least one note. However, some of these items do not in fact contain a note. And indeed, if I click on them, then click on Notes on the right side of the screen I do not see a note. Even weirder : when I do a search for items with notes, I only find the 9 correct items which indeed have a note, and not the 36 items with a note as indicated in the library.

What could be the cause?
How can I fix it?

    PDFs can have notes attached to them (and ZotFile, if you have it installed, would often automatically add a note to a PDF containing its ToC) and they'd show up as a note in the middle panel's note column. You can see them in the right-hand panel when you select the PDF in the middle.

    Yes, that's exactly it! ToC attached to my pdfs. I didn't know pdfs could have notes.
