  • Can you provide a Debug ID for Zotero startup using the "Restart with Logging Enabled…" option?
  • I cannot get a Debug ID because there are no articles when I load my Zotero.

I'm not sure what you mean by that — a Debug ID doesn't have anything to do with whether there are articles. Did you try to follow the instructions?
  • The instructions when I open Zotero are as follows:

An error has occured. Pleas restart Zotero.

You can report this error by selecting "Report Errors.." from the Help Menu.

I have done this and have received a report ID 304200893 and then followed the instructions to post it in the forum.
  • I had screened over 500 articles into included or excluded folders and upon opening zotero today there does not seem to be anything in my library, however the subfolders in the library are still present which does not make any sense.
  • I'm asking you to follow the Debug ID instructions using "Restart with Logging Enabled…" to provide a Debug ID from Zotero startup. We need that in order to help you. Another Report ID isn't going to help.
  • Are you able to open the Zotero preferences? If so, can you check your database integrity from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences? Does it pass?

If not, how big is the zotero.sqlite file in your Zotero data directory?
  • Yes it does pass so I do not understand what the error is. My subfolders are still present but in the main panel, there is nothing there except for the error message.
  • It says that sqlite file is 75,468 kb
  • Can you try creating a new Zotero profile?

First, make sure that you're able to start up with a new empty profile and create a couple sample items, and then restart into that profile and make sure the items load properly.

Then, in that profile, go to the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the preferences and set the data directory to your original data directory (C:\Users\:username\Zotero), and see if it starts up that way.
  • It says I cannot set up the new profile with syncing
  • I'm not sure what you mean by that — you need to say the exact message you're receiving — but I didn't say anything about syncing. Don't set up syncing.
  • It says I cannot set up the new profile with syncing

You really need to follow the links we provide, which are part of our instructions. I didn't say to create a new Zotero account, and that's absolutely not what you should be doing here. I linked to instructions for creating a new Zotero profile in your local Zotero app.
  • You should delete the new account to avoid confusion.
  • I have followed the direction and have restarted it with the same error message present. I have tried to import on new source and cannot even do that.
  • Can you provide a Debug ID for a startup in the new profile?
  • That's not from a new profile — that's from your original profile.

We need a Debug ID for starting Zotero up with the profile manager and selecting the new profile and getting the same error.
  • In addition to this when I try to set up syncing under preferences so this does not happen again, it is not letting me.
  • I understand you are trying to help but I copy and pasted just like the instructions have posted. I am not very familiar with all the specifics of the instructions you are giving me and I am trying to do this right now to the best of my ability but it does not seem to be working
  • Do not try to set up syncing.

I said this above. If you're going to post here, you need to carefully read what we write and follow our advice. We will help you, but you're risking causing more serious damage — not to mention wasting our and your time — by not following our instructions carefully.

I understand you are trying to help but I copy and pasted just like the instructions have posted.
What instructions are you referring to? What are the steps you followed, and what exactly happened? I'm saying that your Debug ID is for your original profile, not the new one as I asked for.
  • If you're confused about something in our instructions, we need you to say exactly what you don't understand. Don't try something if you don't understand it.
  • I am trying to understand what you mean by creating another profile. From my understanding by clicking the link you provided, I copy and pasted the following:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe -P
    into the run bar.

Then zotero relaunches. I then did the steps to get another debug id and that is what I copy and pasted.
  • OK. When you do that, you should see a profile manager window pop up, with options for creating, deleting, and selecting profiles. It will look like the window here, but for Zotero instead of Firefox:

    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows

    Is that what happens?
  • No this does not happen
  • I completely turned off my computer and tried again and it worked this time
  • Holy thank the lord I am so happy that this worked. Why did this happen?
