APA 6th Edition - not ordering by date and addition of first name in-text citation

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been asked before (I've looked but could not find this specific question). I've been having two problems lately working in APA style that I have not had before with Zotero.

First of all, Zotero seems to be muddling up the dates within the in-text citations. Usually it does cite them correctly from oldest date to most recent, but sometimes they are completely randomized (i.e. 2015, 1997, 2010). Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

Secondly, I have two/three citations from the same main author but different co-authors which seems to be causing a lot of problems. First of all, sometimes the first name is being used within the in-text citation (I have checked and made sure I am using the same format for last and first name for the author within each reference), and in the bibliography, it is not ordering them a or b if they are from the same year. Is there anyway of solving this without having to manually input these changes?

Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions!
  • First, be sure you have selected American Psychological Association 6th Edition, not American Sociological Association 6th Edition.

For your first question, note that APA sorts first by author (the first six authors), then by date. So if the "2015" item is by "Jones" and the "1997" item is by "Smith", that would be the correct order. If those three items are by the same authors, check that automatic sorting is enabled for that citation. Place your cursor in the citation and click the Add/Edit Citation button in the Zotero tab. Click on the Z icon on the left side of the Add Citation bar and make sure "Keep Citations Sorted" is checked. It's on by default, but might have been unchecked if you dragged the citations around to reorder them.

For your second question, I'm not exactly sure what you are seeing. When citations are ambiguous and they have different authors, APA style says to add additional author names until they are no longer ambiguous. Additionally, if you have multiple first authors with the same last name, APA says to add first initials to distinguish them (even if the citations are not ambiguous).
