Pdf indeaxing and metadata retrieving are not working

Hi all,

First, thx for the fantastic work on Zotero!

I'm a windows xp user. Firefox 3.0.11. Zotero 2.0b6.3
I'm working on a institutional computer (university). It uses a proxy for internet access (port 8080).

Zotero works find for me except the advanced pdf features : indexing and metadata retrieving.

I installed pdftotext and pdf info with the Zotero interface. Every things looks ok, but it's not working.

If I add a pdf with text (not only image) the status in the right column is "indexed:no". If if try to re-index the pdf, it's not working.

When I add a new pdf (drag and drop) and try to retrive metadata, a window opens with the name of the pdf, but noting happen.

Could you help me? Do you think it should be a proxy problem.

Ken

PS : at home it's working find.
PS2 : sorry for my english!
PS3 : the sync option is working find

  • I've excerpted the relevant line above. Zotero can't execute the PDF tools. This may be due to a security policy on the university machines, or the files may have been corrupted. Try going into your Zotero data directory, deleting the pdfinfo and pdftotext tools, restarting Firefox, clearing the Firefox cache, and reinstalling the tools from the Zotero preferences. You might also try running the programs from the command line to see if they work.
  • Hi Dan,

    Thank you very much.
I looked in my Zotero folder. Every Xpdf files (pdfinfo-Win32.exe, pdfinfo-Win32.exe.version, pdftotext-Win32.exe and pdftotext-Win32.exe.version) was only 1 Ko. I think the university policy doesn't accept ".exe" file to be downloaded.

I try to delete these 1Ko files, restart and empty the cache. Then I copy from my personal computer (at home) the 4 files into my university Zotero directory. Those files were 1Ko for the version file and something like 580Ko for the .exe files.

But it still doesn't work. (new ID :13722430)

I also try the advanced user installation of the xpdf files... but I'm not an advanced user, so I'm not sur I did well.

Thanks again for your work and support.

  • There are no Zotero errors in your latest error report. Did you send that in after trying Retrieve Metadata from PDF and before restarting Firefox?
  • Yes.
The indexing function and metadata retrieving function are not working but I can't see any Zotero errors... strange...
I think I'm going to give up.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • I have the same problem here on my Windows 7 box.
I made a Logfile with the Sysinternals Process Monitor; maybe it helps you to find the problem.

  • Hello !

I think i would really be found of zotero if i didn't have the same problems... I've got a MacBook with Firefox 3.5, the newest version of zotero and when I want to retrieve metadata for PDF, the window opens, the wheel starts to turn and that's it. Nothing happens next.

Hope you've got answers and solutions,
    Antoine.
  • is that true for all pdfs or just for some?
  • No, this is the same problem for all.
  • Hi,

I am having the same problem. No PDF metadata or indexing, no matter if they are previous PDf stored in the computer or new (downloaded after zotero installation by right clicking on the PDF link).
    My report number is:676623949
I have: windows XP professional-SP3,firefox 4.0, zotero 2.1.8 (installed today).
I have tried deleting the files from the directory, and install them again from the search tab in preferences. I have also checked on the forum, but none of the cases appear to be solved.
    Thanks in advance !

My money's on Kaspersky. Disable that and any other security software you have installed and try again. If that works, figure out if you can whitelist certain executables for Firefox in your security software.
