Item titles?

I am using Zotero with scientific papers that I am accessing from several publishers web sites. Depending on the journal and publisher, the item title (in the middle pane) shows up as the name of the publisher, or as publisher dash journal name. In a few cases it is publisher dash journal and then article name. that means that when I look at a list of papers, all I actually see is a list of publishers names or journal names.

I would like to have this list either show only the article name or something like "author, date". I can not find any way to change this display. Is this possible?

I can give several examples of this if that would help.
  • I don't understand exactly:
For me, as long as the citation information is correct (i.e. only the title of the article is in the title field in the right pane) you should only see the title of the article in the middle pane. Any other behavior would be very surprising and examples would indeed help.

In any case, if you wish, you can a minimize the title column by clicking on the space between "Title" and "Creator" and dragging the two sided arrow to the left. Using the little table icon next to "Creator" you can then add "Date" as another displayed cateogry.
  • I am not surprised that it is unclear.

A longer example: I did a search on PubMed and found an article of interest. I clicked on the link for the publisher, and was taken to this page:

    http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/fpd.2004.1.153?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&rfr_dat=cr_pub%3dncbi.nlm.nih.gov

I clicked the "Create new item from current page" button. The item title is that was created is
"Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. - Foodborne Pathogens and Disease - 1(3):153".

I would rather have it show "Danielsson-Tham et al." or the article title.

Is this because I am saving a web page? Is there some other way of doing this that I am missing?

I have seen similar behavior from Science Direct and a couple of other sites.

    Thanks.

Yes and yes. You should see a little icon next to the URL on the top - for me it's a yellow folder for that particular page, more typically you will seen a lined page like the one you should see on top of this page. If you click this to import the article, the metadata will be correct, as will be the display of the title. Generally, this is by far the preferable way of saving articles. The "Create New Item" button is only for those cases where no translator (i.e. no item in the URL bar) exists.

Edit: if I drag the thus imported entry from Zotero up here I get:
Danielsson-Tham, M.-L. et al. 2004. “Causes Behind a Human Cheese-Borne Outbreak of Gastrointestinal Listeriosis.” Foodborne Pathogens and Disease 1(3): 153-159.

    - nice no?
  • thanks. I will try that.

Is there a simple way to correct the existing problem items?
  • depends what you mean by "simple". No automated way, no.
You can just change their titles in the right hand pane manually.
Alternatively, I think they should all have the original link, you could follow that, use the right scrapping method, transfer any note or so you have been taking and then delete the old item (using remove from library to actually delete it - delete from collection won't do).
