pdfinfo & pdftotext crash: "Program too big to fit in memory"

Hi.

I'm using zotero 2.0b5 on XP pro SP3, and have installed the pdf utilities 'automagically' via zotero's preferences. When trying to index a PDF, the above two programs fail with that message.

I've loaded zotero with logging enabled, and finally tracked the problem to the .exe files themselves, i.e. - running either pdfinto-Win32.exe or pdftotext-Win32.exe manually (from command prompt), without any parameters, they immediately crash.

I've also tried to create a DOS shortcut, where I can manually configure the memory requirements, but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Itay.
  • Anyone ? Zotero team ? Help ??

    Please, pretty please...
  • Is this 32-bit or 64-bit Windows?
  • Have you tried erasing and reinstalling the binaries?

Do the official versions (which won't work with Zotero) exhibit the same problem?
  • Hi, Dan.

Yes, erasing and reinstalling didn't work.
As to the official (regular) binaries - they work fine (yet not with Zotero).

    Thanks,
    Itay
  • Any clues ?

    Thanks,
    Itay
  • I suspect they're corrupted somehow (e.g. due to a network problem while downloading). Redownloading is perhaps just pulling them from the Firefox cache. Try erasing them, clearing Firefox's cache, and reinstalling.

Or maybe there's something on your system (Firefox extension, anti-virus program, or, well, a virus) that's corrupting them. For what it's worth, pdfinfo should be 598,016 bytes, and pdftotext should be 593,920.
  • Thanks, it worked.

It seems that the files were damaged (and of the wrong size, though not by much). I just copied them from another computer where I have Zotero installed. The interesting thing is that both them were damaged in a similar fashion.

May I just suggest that you put a link on Zotero.org to direct download those files ? I guess that would come in handy for similar situations.

    Thanks again,
    Itay.
  • good idea on the link
