    What's the problem, exactly?

In general, see Troubleshooting Translator Errors.
  • I am unable to use the connector and I see a constant grey icon on the browser instead of the logo "Z". When I installed it, all worked fine for a week or two but since last 4 - 5 days nothings seems to be working, it is simply not responding. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall. I have worked with the translator. I tried downloading the standalone version but that is not available. I have a mac and I am using firefox.
  • You're not supposed to see a Z. The icon changes depending on what page you're on.

But you shouldn't see a gray webpage icon on every page, either. If you're seeing that on every page, follow the troubleshooting steps I linked to above in full.
I tried downloading the standalone version but that is not available.
I'm not sure what you mean by this. You should have Zotero installed and open on your computer when you're trying to save.
  • Thanks but here are the two issues -
    1) I see the gray icon on every page
    2) one of the trouble shooting options was to use zotero standalone rather than for a specific browser. I currently have zotero for firefox. I tried downloading standalone but I do not find it.
  • Also the Z sign appears when i open a new webpage, but the moment I type something it vanishes.
  • one of the trouble shooting options was to use zotero standalone rather than for a specific browser.
I don't know what you're referring to — please quote the line you're referring to. The word "standalone" doesn't appear on the troubleshooting page I linked to.
I tried downloading standalone but I do not find it.
The download page has two things: the Zotero program, and the Zotero Connector. You should have both installed, and you should have Zotero open when you try to save.
I currently have zotero for firefox.
Unless you're running a years-old version of Firefox, you don't have "Zotero for Firefox" — you have the "Zotero Connector for Firefox". "Zotero" is a separate program that runs on your computer, and it's what people are almost always referring to when they refer to "Zotero".
Also the Z sign appears when i open a new webpage, but the moment I type something it vanishes.
It has nothing to do with typing. The Z is just a temporary icon while the page is loading. Once Zotero detects something on the page, it updates the icon. A gray page icon is perfectly normal on many sites — it will say "Save to Zotero (Web Page with Snapshot)" if you hover over the button. On pages where Zotero can detect better data, you should see icons in color for various other detected item types (journal article, newspaper article, etc.).
  • I have the latest version of firefox and zotero for firefox. I went to this site https://zotero-manual.github.io/installing-zotero/ and found the option to install zotero connector which did not work.

Anyway for now I seem to get the citations saved.
P.s. I am not a tech expert and am trying my best to work with the options provided. I used several of the troubleshooting options in the link (in the last couple of days). Anyway, like I said, it is saving documents for now and am fine with that. Thanks for your time.
  • No, again, there's no such thing as "Zotero for Firefox" anymore. There hasn't been in years. Read A Unified Zotero Experience from 2017 if you're having trouble understanding this.

Again, you should have both Zotero and the Zotero Connector. Both are available on the main download page, which I linked to above and which the large Download button on the front of zotero.org takes you to.
I'm not sure why — that's an outdated, unofficial site that I didn't link to. I linked to the specific troubleshooting page you would need for the problem you were experiencing, as well as the main download page for Zotero. Everything you need is on this site.

We're happy to help you here, but we do need you to use the specific information we provide.

Anyhow, glad to hear it's working now. But please do make sure you're actually running both Zotero and the Zotero Connector.
