Add/Edit Citation button is not working properly_2020-04-17
Hi, I have the following problem that I cannot edit my citations anymore. Everytime I try to edit, Zotero opens a new citation and leaves the old one untouched. The only way is to make a new citation and delete the old one, which is annoying as there are many of them.
I have done the troubleshooting part as recommended with updates and I have as well looked in the forums for solutions. There I have seen that a few other people have a similar problem. Anyway, I have updated Word 2016 and the de- and re-installed the newest Zotero version including the newest plug-in for word. I can still not enter my old citations to edit them.
Any Idea how to solve that problem would be highly appreciated, as I am trying hard to finish my PhD.
Warmest regards,
F

This is an old discussion that has not been active in a long time. Before commenting here, you should strongly consider starting a new discussion instead. If you think the content of this discussion is still relevant, you can link to it from your new discussion.
If not, the document was likely saved in the wrong format. See Existing Citations Not Detected.
If they're still active citations but aren't appearing in the citation dialog when you click within one and click Add/Edit Citation, we'd want to see a Debug ID for that.
I cannot right-click on my citations at all. When I right-click on any citation, the cursor ends up in front of the citation. So, the citations are not accesible as I cannot click on them. However if I move my cursor over them the show the corrct content of the citation (i.e. I click on No. 248 it shows "Humphrey W.S. (1997), p.285). Further if I add a new citation it numbers it correctly (i.e. if I add a new one after no. 248 it is the number 249). But after creation I cannot acess or edit it in any way. I have also not Unlinked my citations, and when I use an older save file of this document or even if I create a new word file, it is the same as described above.
Now, I've done the Debug option as requested and as described online with the following Debug ID (D484524526).
Hopefully you can make something out of it. If needed I can certainly repeat that debug step.
Kind regards and thank you very much in advance!

unfortunately this is not the problem. If I change anyting by hand in the footnote, it is still not reflected in my bibliography. All I want that it works again as before with the Add//Edit Citation" button.
But thanks for trying to help!
All the best,
F
When I go to the footnote I can change it manually of course, but I cannot access it via Zotero and I can also not access my citations to change them. However, there are there in the document. I have seen some similar problems were reported int the past and mostly it had to do with an MS Word (2016) update or with an Zotero update.
I've tried it now as well at my desktopp, same result here I cannot access my citations. When I oppen up a new word file I cannot access my citations. If I use an older Wordfile of my thesis, I cannot access my citations...so it has to do whether with word or the zotero plug-in, I assume.
@ dstillman -> It would be very nice, as I have submitted all the data requested, to get a confirmation if they were received, and when I can expect a reply.
Kind regards,
F
We need an answer to adamsmith's exact question: Specifically: I don't know what you mean by "I can change it manually of course" I don't know what you mean by this. I don't know what you mean by this.
See Steps to Reproduce for the kind of precise description we need.
So, what I can change is the footnote in word without using the Zotero plug-in i.e. I can change "250 Downey, M. (2009), pp. 62-70" to "250 Downey, M. (2010), pp. 65-72" for instance, but this changes give me a message from Zotero that I have manually changed the citation and it will be not automatically updated anymore.
When I am in the text and try to access the citation "249 Downey, M. (2009), pp. 62-70" - I still xcould not put the cursor in the number just in front of it "|249"Zotero opens the red framed window and inserts 249 in front of now "250 Downey, M. (2009), pp. 62-70" and awaits the entry of a new citation.
I hope this is detailed enough, and also understandable. By the way thank you for your patience and your help.
Kind regards,
F
1) The citation number is just part of the Word footnote — that's not the Zotero citation. To use Add/Edit Citation, you need to click on the actual Zotero citation — e.g., "Downey, M. (2009), pp. 62-70". Zotero citations are Word fields, and by default they should highlight in gray when you click on them. If that's not happening, check your Word settings to make sure field shading is set to either "When selected" or "Always". 2) Maybe you mistyped, but if you're trying to change a year, that's not something you would do via the plugin. That's item metadata, which you need to fix in Zotero itself. After fixing that, click the plugin's Refresh button to update the citation in Word. The page number you would indeed change with Add/Edit Citation.
I know that the footnote is from word, however I am still not able to edit my citation at all. Usually it worked with the "Add/Edit Citation" button, that when I clicked on the number in the text Zotero was opening the citation in the red framed window and then I could go to "classic view" and add for example "according to" as prefix, or I could change the page numbers if they are from a newer version.
As described before, I cannot do that anymore as when pushing the Zotero "Add/Edit Citation" button, Zotero alway opens a new citation with a new number.
I have also as suggested tried to change the options in word in regards to the field shading, but unfortunately with no effect. Word does recognie however the zotero enries as I can let me show functions instead of values.
Below you find an example from my document
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Example from the text and the footnote
"...such as majors, second-tier integrated organisations, and independent E&P organisations.249"
_____________
249 According to Downey, M. (2009), pp. 62–70
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To sum up, I can create new citations, but I cannot edit or change them when created. This was possible earlier, but is now not possible for whatever reason. I am no expert, but I assume that it has to do with the zotero plug-in or with word 2016.
In regards to your second paragraph, the year was indded a bad example.
So far no solution yet, as the problem still persist.
I am looking forward to your next reply - THX!
Kind regards,
F
I suspect you're just confusing this with numeric in-text styles, where the actual citation is just a superscript number in the text, and there's no footnote involved. In that case, the number itself is the citation. That's not the case here. If you set field shading to Always and your citations don't turn gray, something is wrong with your Word installation. But if you set it to "When selected", you'll need to click within the actual citation for it to turn gray. Again, the footnote number is not the citation. That's another misunderstanding. There's no reason to use the classic view for this. Just click on the blue bubble in the red bar for the citation you want to customize. See Customizing Cites.
thanks. I got what you meant. Thanks for your help and my apologies for the misunderstanding!
Best regards,
