Hyperlinks of inline references in word doc just vanished and now simple superscript text only

Hello

So I just accessed a grant application I was hoping to modify, that is stored in dropbox folder that is manifested as a downloaded virtual "drive" on my PC. However, when I accessed it, I discovered that all the grayed-out hyperlink-related in-line references (numerical superscripts) were now STRIPPED of all the apparent connection to a biblio reference, and had been reduced to simple text! When I tested out adding a new reference, it created a new bibliography starting at 1!

What happened? What could restore the dynamic numbering? The file has not been manipulated, nor to my knowledge has my copy of MS WOrd (2016)!

  • Thank you. I am certain that NONE of the scenarios listed in that page happened for at least one of my old documents that is now just typed prose. I have never used any text editor other than MS Word or a file type other than .doc or .docx.

Interestingly, using the hot keys to toggle dynamic fields on and off, I still see gibberish pertaining to references appear, yet the document solicits a new referencing style when I try to add a new reference, as though no references are stored within it.

Is there any hope or point to sending to zotero technical support people the electronic document for inspection?
  • Email the file to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread and we’ll take a look.
  • Could you take a screenshot of the code of an expanded field, post it on a free image hosting site and link to it here?

Dropbox should offer you access to older versions of the file -- it'd be worth checking out the version history. One thing that I'd be worried about is Dropbox's Office integration, i.e. opening the file online, although that really shouldn't change it unless you alter it.

@jmbjork: Those are EndNote citations ("ADDIN EN.CITE"), not Zotero citations.
  • (Face-palm). Well, that WOULD be yet another alternative explanation now wouldn't it. I thought I switched over to Zotero far earlier than I really did. Thanks for giving it a look!
