Zotero crashes when searching for file on "Link to File" Report ID: 1572115405

Steps to reproduce:

1. Choose "Link to File"
2. Search for document in the file search dialogue box on Windows
3. Zotero crashes

That sounds like a problem with Windows on your computer, not a Zotero problem — that dialog is provided by Windows itself. We haven't received other reports of this, and it works fine for me.

I'd start by making sure you're up to date on all software, and if you're running third-party security software or anything else unusual try temporarily disabling it.
  • To clarify, it works fine when I manually search for files and scroll through. When I use the search function -- trying to type something in the upper right hand corner -- it consistently crashes. I am up to date on all software and do not run any antivirus programs.
  • Right, but that's not our dialog — that's a standard Windows dialog. If it's crashing, that's not something we can fix.
  • Definitely can't claim to know what I'm talking about, but when the box opens, it has a Zotero overlay and is also blurrier than the normal box when you open it on Windows. Same thing for Chrome and other programs. It seems that there are compatibility issues, but I don't know through what means it's made compatible. Also could just be a problem with my Windows, as you mention.
  • Also seems strange that it would cause Zotero itself to crash rather than just close the box.

What do you mean by "Zotero overlay"? The Zotero icon in the top left? That's just because the dialog is opened from Zotero. It's still an OS dialog.

No, that's not strange at all. Zotero is still the containing program that triggers the dialog, and a crash is always going to take down the containing app. But there's no code in Zotero that makes the dialog, shows the list of files, implements a search of your filesystem, etc., so the crash isn't within our control. Zotero just tells Windows to open a file dialog, the same dialog you get if you go to File → Open in, say, Notepad.
  • Did anyone figure out how to solve this? I have the same issue. Windows is new and up to date and I just tried to get my library running again. I have never had great success getting the pdfs linked again when starting a new zotero on a different computer but with the search impossible due to the crashes this is impossible. Any hints would be appreciated
