install error

I get this message when I install zotero 2.0 beta on my vaio, running vista, firefox 3.0.11.
I had an earlier version (don't know which) of Zotero installed.

  • could not find this one referenced in past discussions.
  • thanks, will review.
  • So, I don't see resolutions to the problem.
  • I followed some other links to this problem (not the one referenced, though, because it had no information associated with it, no discussion) and explored the issue surrounding the zotero.sqlite file. My guess is that my zotero1+version had followed me from firefox 2.0 to ff3.0+ but had not had problems, but that this created a conflict with the Zotero2.0beta.

Now, I have a new problem. How can I recover that old data? Any thoughts? When I tried to recover, it broke again?

    thanks
  • Had you ever installed the private beta build of Zotero 2.0? From your error report, that appears to be the case.
When I tried to recover, it broke again?
You'll need to be a bit more specific than that.
  • Dan, I applied for the private beta but don't recall if I installed; I think that I probably didn't.

As for "broke again," I read here, and followed the various instructions ...
    http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/1114/
    https://www.zotero.org/utils/dbfix/

I copied the zotero folder to the desktop and removed the folder completely after uninstalling. I installed zotero 2.0.5b and it worked.

Meanwhile I repaired the old zotero.sqlite folder and made another copy of the old files. I removed the old zotero.bak files from that directory. And, I tried to point the zotero2.0.5b to that directory to read the old database. It did not work; it kept breaking... I did this several different times, each time with a new zotero2.0.5b.

So, how do I recover that data on the sqlite file?
Does that help a bit? What else might you need.
  • The "breaking" kept producing the same database error as I received originally.
I would like to recover my data...

I've only seen the error you're getting from people who used the private beta, which wasn't upgradeable to the Sync Preview.

Regardless, assuming you followed the Private Beta or Sync Preview instructions, you should have a backup of your entire Zotero 1.0 data directory. (I'm also assuming you haven't actually used Zotero since then, unless you've been using a very old version for a year.) If so, swap in the backup data directory, and Zotero should upgrade normally.
  • Thanks... I'll give it a try...
  • Note that I did have the private beta... But, swapping in the backup data directory worked. And, I have been able to find all my last data... That "zotero.sqlite.36.bak" was key because I corrupted the "zotero.squlite" when I first performed the upgrade.
Thanks for the guidance, it gave me the ideas/logic that helped me solve the issue, as did the other instructions (cited above) already in the forums.
