Given names not being truncated to initials?

Hi guys,

I'm using APA style and I have some authors who first name isn't being retracted to the initial only in the bibliography of Word, but some that are. I've tried re-entering that name in Zotero but it seems to just extract what I put rather than give the initial.

I can't see that its the disambiguation thing - there is two Botman's in the document but the subsequent orders are ordered differently.

Botman, Julie, F Gabriel, A H A Dugdale, and J.-M. Vandeweerd. ‘Anaesthesia with Sevoflurane in Pigeons: Minimal Anaesthetic Concentration (MAC) Determination and Investigation of Cardiorespiratory Variables at 1 MAC’. Veterinary Record 178, no. 22 (28 May 2016): 560–560. https://doi.org/10.1136/vr.103654.

and

Ambrisko, Tamas D., and Alan M. Klide. ‘Comparison of Use of an Infrared Anesthetic Gas Monitor and Refractometry for Measurement of Anesthetic Agent Concentrations’. American Journal of Veterinary Research 72, no. 10 (1 October 2011): 1299–1304. https://doi.org/10.2460/ajvr.72.10.1299.

The second one formats correctly to T. D. in the bibliography in the document.

Any help appreciated,
Heidi
  • And to annoy me further I've started a small practice document and the same references format correctly in this version. Gah!!
  • The above isn't apa at all. How exactly are you seeing the citation style?
  • Sorry, you mean the bibliography? Perhaps I have used the wrong term?

Those were just copied from the app - this is what they look like in the document.

Botman, Julie, Dugdale, A., Gabriel, F., & Vandeweerd, J.-M. (2016). Cardiorespiratory parameters in the awake pigeon and during anaesthesia with isoflurane. Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, 43(1), 63–71. https://doi.org/10.1111/vaa.12262

Ambrisko, T. D., & Klide, A. M. (2011). Comparison of use of an infrared anesthetic gas monitor and refractometry for measurement of anesthetic agent concentrations. American Journal of Veterinary Research, 72(10), 1299–1304. https://doi.org/10.2460/ajvr.72.10.1299
  • So with playing I've somehow made it work - I completely removed the affected citation in the text, refreshed the bibliography then put the citations back in. Seems to have worked.

I'd really like to know what happened there - are the citations linked to their inserted version? Or just some glitch?

    Thanks
  • If I had to guess, there were two J. Botman's in the document, potentially because of differently entered first names, and Zotero expanded their first names for disambiguation.

Generally citations are linked to the item in Zotero, but you can (including accidentally) remove that link by deleting the corresponding item in Zotero
