Failure to sync PDF files across different machines

Hi,

I am using multiple machines (1 desktop and 2 laptops) to categorize my paper repo. However, I ran into the problem where

1. The meta data and PDFs saved on WebDAV could be synced correctly.
2. The Zotero could NOT track the PDF on WebDAV.
3. The papers ran into problem all came those added by identifier. Those manually added into the repo did fine.

Since I am doing data mining, where papers predominantly came from arXiv, this failure to track down the PDF location interrupted my workflow and dragged down my working efficiency.

I did everything as instructed in the URL (listed below) but no luck. I did the debug output logging and the resulting ID is D459977046.

  • 1. The meta data and PDFs saved on WebDAV could be synced correctly.
    2. The Zotero could NOT track the PDF on WebDAV.
I'm not sure what you mean by this.

Your debug output doesn't appear to show an attempt to open a file that was missing, nor does it indicate any sort of problem. But I'm also not sure what exactly the problem is you're describing.

Can you go through the steps you followed from the Files Not Syncing and say exactly what you did and what happened at each step?
  • Hi @dstillman ,

    Sorry about the confusion.

    By 1 and 2, I mean
    1. The items stored in Zotero could be synced correctly across machines but NOT the corresponding PDF attachment.
    2. The PDF attachment are indeed synced through OneDrive. Therefore, it seems to be the Zotero's issues in finding those PDFs.

For example, I add one paper on machine A through arXiv ID, the information (excluding PDF attachment) could soon be found on machine B, where I could not open the PDF file. However, it turns out the PDF is indeed synced after checking the file location on OneDrive.

By the way, I am using the extension ZotFile to manage the names of those papers but I do not think it causes the problem.

After repeating the steps, I finally went to the last step and the debug ID is D786642044.

    Thank you.

  • Can you click on a different item, start debug output logging, double-click the attachment that's not opening, and then provide another Debug ID?

But assuming these are linked files stored outside of the Zotero data directory — which they should be, if they're synced via OneDrive — then see Missing Linked File.
  • I do not know what difference between resetting the library or not. So I did both.

If I do not reset the library, the resulting debug ID is D1287589574. If I reset it, by clicking the same attachment, I got another ID, which is D1995881740.
  • By the way, I do not think the reasons listed in "Missing Linked File" are applicable to my case.

    Attachment file 'D:\OneDrive\Research_Resource\2017\Se[…].pdf' not found
Yes, they are applicable. This is a linked file, so it has nothing to do with Zotero file syncing, or WebDAV, or resetting file sync history. The file just isn't in the place where Zotero is looking, and that page explains the possible reasons.

(The next version of Zotero will display this path in the File Not Found dialog to make it clearer where it's looking.)
