How to make simple changes in Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition) (full-note)?

Hi there,
I'm sorry for this akward post. I search a lot in the forum and I couldn't find the answer to my questions, probably because they have been treated a long time ago. But I'm new on Zotero, and I don't know much about coding...
What is the whole process to modify the current style I'm using, i.e. Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition) (full-note)? Should I open the "Document preference" in Word and directly "Edit" the style?
At this point, I only wish to have all my author's names into small-caps (in the notes as well as in the bibliography). I read somewhere about changing the < macro "author" > or "author-short" line, but when I open the code of my style directly in the settings via Word, there is no < macro "author" > line. There are a lot of "editor", "translator", "container" stuffs but no simple "author" macro.
Do you understand what I mean? Can you help me directly or by simply pasting the links to the step by step explanations?
Thank you very much in advance
  • There are general step-by-step instructions here: https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step

The relevant macros have different names in different styles. In Chicago, they're called "contributors" and "contributors-note"

For changing author names to small caps, I think the visual editor may be the easiest way to go.
  • Thank you very much for your answer.
I think I understood some things and I see the utility of these pages but I spent another couple of hours and still didn't solve my issue, or created more issues.
Maybe I will retry one day but it's enough for today.
But all the same: merci beaucoup !
  • Chicago is the most complex style to editing anything, so you didn't pick the easy way into this labyrinth.

    1. Go here> https://editor.citationstyles.org/searchByName/
    2. CMoS Full Note will be the 2nd style there
    3. click on edit > You're now in the Visual Editor
    4. Click on the authors on the right (example citations)
    5. This will highlight the correct macro (in this case, the contriburos-note)
    6. Click on "name" below the "names"
    7. Click on "Small Caps" in the bottom right under "Text formatting"
    8. change file ID, etc. as explained in the article adamsmith posted. Otherwise your new style will be overwritten with the next update.
  • Aaaah! I have some improvals following your advices @damnation !
I still have to work on some issues but the visual editor helped me much. And thanks to say that it's a complex task - I'm relieved!
    Bonne soirée.
