What happens to my data in zotero if zotero will be shut down one day?

I want to start using zotero for my PhD Thesis and I am asking myself: What happens to my data in zotero if zotero will be shut down one day? How is guaranteed/ how can I myself make sure, that all my stuff is safe/saved?
  • Zotero saves all your data locally, so nothing would be lost if Zotero's servers are discontinued.
You can get your data out of Zotero via export in a huge number of formats and Zotero stores its data in an relatively easily readable sqlite database, so other reference software can easily import it (several of Zotero's competitors already offer to do that).
  • Just to add to that, of the available reference managers, Zotero probably makes it easiest to export all of your data out in a way that other programs can use.
