script stack space quota is exhausted

I have submitted Error report ID:151831419 to you regarding a problem I am having trying to complete the first sync of my desktop library with the Zotero server. I am running Zotero 2.0b5 on Firefox 3.0.10, with Vista for Business as the operating system. I have a library on my computer of c. 5,000 items. When I try to sync it with the Zotero server, the synce seems to work for 2 -3 minutes, and then the yellow triangle of death appears! When I mouse over the sync key, the message 'Last error: script stack space quota is exhausted' appears. What does this mean, and how do I get around the problem?

  • Following further attempts to sync between my laptop computer and the Zotero server, I have sent in the following report (ID = 1320640702). This error report makes reference to Zipgenius as a source of the problem, if I interpret things correctly. This puzzles me as I do not have ZipGenius on my laptop. I do however have it on the desktop computer which I originally tried to sync with the server, but all attempts to sync from there have also met with failure, and when I look at MyLibrary on the Zotero server, I get a message to the effect that it is empty, so I am not clear where the error when the laptop is trying to sync might be coming from.
Are there any known problems with Zotero 2.0b5 and ZipGenius?

Those messages are unrelated to Zotero. The problem is on your desktop computer.

We've never seen the "script stack space quota is exhausted" message before. How much RAM do you have on your desktop machine?
  • The desktop machine presently runs with 512k RAM.

For clarification though, the "script stack space quota is exhausted" message appears on my laptop, which has 2GB of RAM - for some reason the desktop does not produce any messages when I mouse over any of the Zotero buttons, so I cannot be sure that the same message appears there as on the laptop.

I have uninstalled ZipGenius from my desktop computer and tried again to sync with the Zotero server, but without success. The error message generated (ID=740051295) has been sent to you, and appears to implicate JavaScript.
Is there a recommended version of JavaScript which is known to work with Zotero 2.0 without problems, and which I might try to solve my particular difficulty?

I'm a bit confused. In your original post you referred to your "desktop library" and seemed to imply that that's where you had 5,000 items and where you got the "stack space" error.

Can you confirm that the laptop with 2GB of RAM is where you're seeing the "stack space" error on sync? If it appears on hover, it should really appear in Report Errors as long as you send in the error report after the error and before restarting Firefox. None of your error reports so far have shown that error.

None of the error reports you've posted have any errors related to Zotero, including—as I said above—the messages about ZipGenius. The Report Errors window also says that the report might contain unrelated messages.

Disabling all other Firefox extensions is a fine troubleshooting step, but don't read too much into what you see in Report Errors.
  • Dan,

I can understand the confusion regarding the location of the original "desktop library". It is on the desktop computer which I work with at Aberdeen University in Scotland. This computer has only 512k RAM, but it is the one which I use much of the time. After I failed to sync correctly for the first time, the error messages generated referred to ZipGenius (as I forwarded in my post at that time). I did however wonder if there might be a problem connecting to the Zotero server as the desktop machine is on the University network which is firewalled by the University, or possibly whether or not the problem could relate to the small amount of RAM available to me on that machine.
Accordingly I then copied the library into my laptop (2GB RAM so more powerful) and tried to sync to the Zotero server from the laptop when I was at home (and hence outside the University firewall). That then produced error message (ID=740051295) which I submitted to you, but when I hover over the sync key on the laptop, I get the "script stack space quota is exhausted" message there. For some reason, on my desktop computer at work, hovering over the sync key does not produce any message at all, so I cannot confirm whether or not the two computers are meeting the same problem!
I think that I will follow the suggestion you made about disabling other Firefox extensions, and then see what happens. I will do this both on the laptop and the desktop machines, are there are actually different sets of extensions on the two computers.
Would it be of any help to you to see a screenshot of the "script stack space quota is exhausted" message i get on the laptop?
    Thanks again,

That's all right, but a fresh Report ID from the laptop after disabling all other extensions, restarting Firefox, and attempting a sync might be helpful.
  • I have now disabled all the extensions apart from Zotero on my laptop, and have attempted a sync with the Zotero server. It has again produced an error (Report ID: 1530206960) which I have submitted to you. Interestingly the phrase "script stack space quota is exhausted" does appear in the report this time!

  • Well, my primary advice would be to see if it happens in Firefox 3.5, currently available as in a release candidate that should be pretty close to the upcoming final build. To be safe, I'd recommend making a backup of your entire Firefox profile before trying.
  • Dan,

i have now tried it out in Firefox 3.5 Beta 4. I again got error messages, only this time associated with particular web pages which I have as default tabs on startup. I removed those pages from the startup pages, restarted Firefox, and obtained another 'crash' error, with the message:
[JavaScript Error: "script stack space quota is exhausted" {file: "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/data/item.js" line: 2232}]
I tried submitting this as a formal error report, but instead of obtaining an ID number, a message came up in a small box saying that there had been an 'incorrect response from the repository' or something like that - I did not record the exact phrase.
This may not mean much, but each time it takes a bit longer to get the error yellow triangle to appear on the sync button. I am hoping this means that we are getting close to the answer.
