Deleting library and keeping collections

I apologize if I missed this question in the forum search. I wonder if I can clear my library and keep only the material I have sorted into collections or will clearing my library clear my material from my collections as well.
Many thanks.
  • Quoting https://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags:
"In this sense, collections are more like music playlists than folders in your computer filesystem"
    In other words, no
  • That's not correct.

You can see items that you haven't sorted into any collection by viewing the "Unfiled Items" collection: https://www.zotero.org/support/collections_and_tags#special_collections

If you want to delete those items, you can do so there.

An item can belong to many collections. If you select an item in a collection and type Delete or right-click and choose Remove Item from Collection, it will remove the item from the collection, but leave it in your library root and any other collections.

If you select an item while viewing it in the "My Library" root view, then type Delete or right-click and choose Move Item to Trash, it will move the item to the trash, removing it from all collections.

(You can remove an item directly to the trash [removing it from all collections] directly from a collection view by selecting the item and typing Shift+Delete or right-clicking and selecting Move Item to Trash.)
  • Thanks for both your prompt responses. I guess I just feel overwhelmed having a large library and collections on the same page.
  • You could look into using Zotero Groups to hold items for different topics/projects.
