Merging function disappears suddenly

I have multiple duplicates, 3000+.
If I open the duplicates subfolder, all the duplicates articles appear. In the beginning (it selects automaticly the duplicates) I can merge 3 items and then suddenly it starts selecting single articles (where there are multiple from in the duplicates folder (same document type)), and the merge function disappears.
What causes this? Thanks for helping.
  • Shouldn't happen. Have you tried restarting Zotero? The only way this would happen with Zotero working correctly is if you accidentally right-click (or two-finger click on a Mac) on an item in the Duplicates folder.
  • Testing here on Linux, it will also switch out of merge mode if you navigate with the arrow keys. Clicking on an item will restore the merge-match view.
  • Thank you for your responses, I restarted the whole system to no avail. + Yes you guys are correct. I had attention to all this. I know it's a strange behavior.

Luckily I found this temporary solution. if I disconnect zotero from the internet and restart zotero it will have it's normal merging behavior back. Later if I reconnect it, it will do it again. It probably has something to do with syncing?
  • So after an initial merge, with the items sorted in title order, left-clicking on an item does not highlight the duplicate partners of the item that you click on and show the merge view in the right-hand pane?
  • Yes, indeed that was what was happening.
  • I think that may just be the way it's meant to work.
  • I get this too but only sometimes -- it feels like a race condition somewhere that sometimes makes the "duplicate items" view switch into the standard folder view instead.
