Citations not renumbering

I'm not sure why this is the case, but when I remove references from my document, the citations are not renumbering like they used to and the deleted reference remains in the bibliography. I reinstalled the Word for Mac plug-in, but it's still not working. Please help!

    Have you clicked the Refresh button in the Zotero tab in Word?

    Yes, I tried that multiple times, both in the Zotero tab in Word and in the Zotero program.

    If you place the cursor next to a number that isn’t updating, then click the Add/Edit Citation button in Word, does the citation window with the existing item appear so that you can edit it?

    Yes, the citation window appears. It's just that when I move the sentence with the citation to somewhere else in the paragraph, the number doesn't update and the citation(s) I deleted still have the accompanying references in the bibliography.

    I’m trying to diagnose the problem. Can you clarify—when you say the citation window appears, is the blue bubble for the existing item already there or is the window empty?

    I'd try switching to a different style and back; that often helps. If the style in the document doesn't change back and forth as it should, then return to bwiernik's last question.
