Zotero experiences errors updating my documents

When I tried to add my bibliography to my document in Word, I received this error:

"Zotero experienced an error updating your document.

Would you like to view troubleshooting instructions?"

I viewed the troubleshooting documents located here:
https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/debugging_broken_documents

I tried everything listed, and nothing worked. I have also tried restarting my computer and reinstalling Zotero as well as reinstalling the Word Plugin. I am operating on a Mac running Mojave 10.14.4, Zotero 5.0.66, Word version 16.24. I even tried running the citations in Google Docs with Google Chrome, and that didn't work either - I got the same error message. I also tried creating a completely new document with nothing it it but one citation, and that didn't work either.

My most recent error report number is 321842000.

Can someone advise how to solve this issue?
  • The debugging steps, as they say, are only relevant if you can insert citations into a new document. If you're getting an error in a new document, there's no point in following those.

What are the precise steps necessary to reproduce the problem in a new document? What style are you trying with? Does this happen with one of the build-in styles, like APA?

All I have to do is try to create a bibliography with the word plugin. I can add a citation as normal, and refresh citations. But once I hit “create bibliography” it gives me the error code. This has been happening with the Chicago author-date built-in citation style.
  • Can you provide a Debug ID (different from a Report ID) for this process, in a completely new document?
  • The Debug ID I got from trying to add a bibliography in a 100% new document (nothing but one citation added with the Word plugin) is D1761013993.
  • We need a Debug ID for the whole process, from the creation of the document, not just the bibliography part.

Also, can you temporarily disable auto-sync from the Sync pane of the preferences and restart Zotero so that a sync isn't running at the same time? You can turn it on again after. (It looks like you're at your file sync quota, though, so you should disable file syncing if you're not interested in adding a storage subscription.)
  • I disabled auto-sync and restarted Zotero. I enabled output logging, created a new word document, added one citation, and then tried to add the bibliography. This is the Debug ID:

    D2124696446

    Thanks!

OK, thanks. @adomasven (and maybe @fbennett) will need to take a look.
  • @rpenfi2: Can you export an item that fails as CSL JSON, paste it to https://hastebin.com, save it there and post the URL back to this thread? Just to be sure we're looking at the same scenario.

I'm not (yet) able to reproduce the failure here. Judging from the errors, it might be due to corruption in the style. That's just a guess on my part, but it might be worth reinstalling Chicago Author-Date from https://zotero.org/styles and restarting Zotero to see if that brings it right.
  • Reinstalling the Chicago Author-Date style fixed it. Thank you so much!!
