error 1532356871

Hi,

I`m trying to get my library from work to my private computer. Which means I`m trying to sync my empty library at home with my existing zotero libary using zotero 2.0 beta. The libary contains about 300 items.
Firefox either breaks down or the sync button is active for about an hour without anything happening. The error meassage is: 1532356871.
I did not finish an before started sync. I tried to reset the sync, but firefox always breaks down.
What can I do?

  • Restart Firefox and try again, and post a new Report ID if there's still a problem.
  • I tried it and also reset my library at home but still firefox crashes. I´m trying to start a new sync but of course:

"Another sync operation, started 3 minutes ago from the current IP address, is still in progress. This may indicate an active sync or may have been caused by an interrupted session.

Do you want to reset the existing session? You should only do so if you do not believe another sync process is currently running."

    error ID is: 784839253

  • That message just means what it says. What happens after you click Reset?
  • firefox crashes
  • Define "crashes".
  • no response any more
  • OK, so it's hanging, not crashing. This may just mean that Zotero is preparing the upload, which at the moment has the potential to temporarily freeze the user interface. Have you tried waiting a few minutes?
  • what means a few minutes? around 10 or around 30 min?
  • It depends on the speed of your computer, how much RAM you have, etc., but it really shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes even for a fairly big library, and ideally should take much less. You might want to try just letting it go when you'll be away from the computer for a while, but you could also open up the Windows Task Manager and look at CPU usage and disk activity for firefox.exe.
  • It worked!!! Thank you very much!!!

  • Hi Dan,

From your phrase "at the moment" I surmise that this is on the list of future improvements. Is this correct?

The reason I ask is that I get such messages frequently and was going to report the problem. (Generally, I do NOT manually initiate Zotero syncs.) If this will be fixed soon, I can live with it for now.

Also, I was not sure which software is generating the message. Besides the Zotero beta, I use other synchronized software for other purposes -- Xmarks, Windows Live Sync, Dropbox, and various calendar and task synchronizers (to coordinate Google Calendar, iCal, Sunbird, and Lightening) -- to name the most prominent. Other specific software, such as Taboo for Firefox or Thinking Rock, will likely be adding synchronization soon. For people like me, who work out of multiple offices, synchronization is the wave of the future.

I'm bringing this up to make two points. First, the message discussed here has no identifier saying Zotero is issuing the message. When there's a chance that a software will be run in an environment where other programs might issue similar messages, I think the issuing software should always identify itself. In other words, please consider this a request to change this message (and all other messages from Zotero) to mention Zotero.

Second, I've a fairly large library (125 MB -- I don't know how to find the number of records), and I often get this message saying the sync operation started an hour ago. All the computers I use have the maximum RAM and fairly recent processors, so I'm inclined to believe the longer time is due to other things happening at the same time. With so much synchronization and other activity potentially going on in the background, including accessing the Internet, might Zotero's synchronization takes much longer than a few minutes? If so, this might imply the desirability of taking this into account in the algorithm used to initiate Zotero's automatic syncs.
  • From your phrase "at the moment" I surmise that this is on the list of future improvements. Is this correct?
That was in reference to hanging the user interface. Fixes depend on enhancements to the Firefox architecture (which may or may not yet be available—we haven't investigated in a while), but it isn't related to sync speed or the rest of what you're discussing.
The reason I ask is that I get such messages frequently and was going to report the problem.
They don't really indicate a problem that needs reporting. Generally, they indicate that a previous sync attempt failed. There was a bug in 2.0b4, fixed in 2.0b5, that prevented failed sync attempts from properly unlocking the server, but the problem is the failed sync, not the reset message.

After a failed sync, there would be an error message in Report Errors (and hovering over the sync error icon) on the machine that started that sync.
When there's a chance that a software will be run in an environment where other programs might issue similar messages, I think the issuing software should always identify itself.
That's true, but the real problem in this case is that the reset message shouldn't really appear for background (i.e., automatic) syncs. It does at the moment, and this should be fixed. If you click the sync icon yourself, it's clear that the message is coming from Zotero. (We'll change it to "Another Zotero sync operation" anyway, though.)
might Zotero's synchronization takes much longer than a few minutes?
No. If it fails, you should get an error within a few minutes. If the sync icon keeps spinning for more than 10 minutes, it's not going to stop, and you should send in an error report, start a forum thread mentioning the Report ID, and restart Firefox.
  • Thanks for the quick and complete response (on Sunday, even!). I've upgraded to 2.0b5, and hopefully this will fix the problem. I take it from your explanation that should this problem reoccur, clicking the reset button is the appropriate fix.
