Zotero is very slow - takes 30 seconds to add each reference

I have about 1000 items in my library
The document I'm working in has 92,000 words and 850 footnotes. Can you help me add citations more quickly? Thanks.

You're using a very old version of Zotero. Start by upgrading to Zotero 5.

We can't support old versions, and Zotero 5 also includes an option for faster citing in large documents.
  • Thanks, dstillman. Obviously, I'm a dinosaur! Can you walk me through upgrading? And I won't lose any data, will I?
  • OK, I figured it out. And I followed your instruction for faster citing in large documents. How often do you recommend refreshing to update citations?

Depends how long it takes, but the main thing is just to make sure you don't wait until right before a due date, because 1) in a large-enough document it could take a very long time (e.g., overnight) and 2) you want to make sure that, if there's a problem, you/we have time to troubleshoot.
