need help to tweak Bibliography style for repeat authors

Hi all,

I am using Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition (author-date) for my report. In the Bibliography, repeat authors are listed as ________ with letter a, b, c, and so forth.

My editor doesn't like that and would like to see the author names printed, instead of the _______.

How can I tweak this? Should I change to a different style? If yes, which one?

I am using PC and Word 2010.

Thank you.
  • Ok, I just found that 'Fish and Fisheries' style would answer my query. However, in Fish and Fisheries, it doesn't allow information on URL sources of the references to come out. I have checked the option to show the URLs of the documents, but of course, as all of my references have page numbers, the URLs do not come out.

Any chance to adjust this? Pls advise & help. Thanks.
  • You can modify Chicago style by taking out
    subsequent-author-substitute="———"

Fishes and Fisheries is probably more complicated.
    See general instructions here: https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step
But what are your requirements here? There are of course plenty of author-date styles without author substitute (starting with APA style)

    Hi adamsmith,

Thanks for the pointer. However, I am totally new with Zotero, and I have no idea on how to tweak this as per your suggestion.

I downloaded the latest Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition (ver. 22 May 2018) and opened it with my Windows' Notepad, and all I saw were piles and piles of codes, which I have no idea what they are.

Then I search for subsequent-author-substitute="———", as per your suggestion above by searching it with Notepad, and I couldn't find it.

My report has a lot of statutes as sources of information.

My requirement for the Bibliography (of the statutes) is a style like Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition, but without the dash line "_______" for repeat authors.

The APA style does not conform with our requirement, as it does not have the year directly after the author in the Bibliography :

PEMRI. Undang-Undang Republik Indonesia Nomor 23 Tahun 2014 Tentang Pemerintah Daerah [Act of the Republic of Indonesia No. 23/2014 Pertaining To Regional Government] (2014). Retrieved from https://peraturan.bpk.go.id/Home/Details/38685/uu-no-23-tahun-2014

I need something like this (with URL source):

PEMRI. 2014. Undang-Undang Republik Indonesia Nomor 23 Tahun 2014 Tentang Pemerintah Daerah [Act of the Republic of Indonesia No. 23/2014 Pertaining To Regional Government]. https://peraturan.bpk.go.id/Home/Details/38685/uu-no-23-tahun-2014.

With Fish and Fisheries, it becomes like this (without the URL source):

PEMRI (2014) Undang-Undang Republik Indonesia Nomor 23 Tahun 2014 Tentang Pemerintah Daerah [Act of the Republic of Indonesia No. 23/2014 Pertaining To Regional Government].

Unfortunately, Fish and Fisheries doesn't give the URL source, but at least it does not give the "_____" for repeat authors.

If there is an easy way to take out the "_____" in the codes for repeat authors in Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition, I greatly appreciate it. As it stands now, I cannot take it out myself, as I have no idea where to look for or what to take out.

    Thank you.
