New references not accesible in single Word documents

Hi,

I have Zotero 5.0.55, including the Word- and Firefox-plugins. I've been using it frequently but now have problems inserting newly added references into some of my Word documents.

If I want to add new references to some of my existing documents (incluing previously added references), I cannot find them via the Zotero plugin although they exist in my library. This is even more puzzling because I can search and find them via the plugin if I open a new Word document. There seems to be a problem with a couple of documents only, but I am unsure what the issue is.

Any advice or suggestions how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
  • Could you produce a Debug ID from Zotero?

    1. In the Help menu, go to Debug Output Logging and select Enable.
    2. In Word click the Add/Edit Citation button
    3. Type the query that should find a result, but doesn't and wait a few seconds for results to finish loading
    4. Before doing anything else, return to Help → Debug Output Logging and click Submit Output, which will disable logging and submit the output to zotero.org. A window should pop up containing a Debug ID. Click “Copy to Clipboard” and paste the Debug ID into this forum thread.

Thank you for the quick reply.

    The Debug ID is D618672685
  • How many entries do you have with the same author name? Do you see all of the entries listed for this query in a new document citation dialog? If you insert some of these entries in a new document do you still see all entries listed in the citation dialog?
  • I have 44 interview entries where the author name ("respondent") only differs by the number ("1, 2, 3, etc...").

In the existing document with the problem, I can only see entries 1-25 listed in the citation dialog, but the newly added ones (26-44) are nowhere to be found. In a new document, I can however see and select them all in the citation dialog. Likewise, if I copy one of these entries from a new document (where it works) and insert the citation into my existing document, it also works and is added to my citations. Nonetheless, I can then still not search and find that particular citation via the add-function.
  • If you add citations for entries 1-25 in a new document, do you still get the remaining ones in the citation dialog?
  • We haven't seen something like this before. It could be your existing document corruption, but it could also be a bug on Zotero's side. More detailed debugging is needed. Could you run through the debugging broken documents steps for the existing doc?
  • Apart from 3 and 4/5, none of the steps apply to my case.

    3. Copying and pasting the document content into a new document does not help, the problem persists and I cannot find all the citation entries there either.

4/5. Duplicating the document and then switching to a different bibliography style in the copy of the file does not solve the issue either.
  • You should try step 8. I.e. keep on splitting the document in half, until you find a portion that is causing items to not appear in the citation dialog.
