IEEE Xplore translator doesn't download PDF files, using instituiton proxy, Zotero 5.0.54
Hi,
I'm when using the "Save to Zotero" connector button in firefox for IEEE Xplore articles, it downloads the meta data and webpage screen shot, but does not attempt to download the PDF file. This appears to affect all the articles/papers I try to save.
I've seen this issue post a lot in these forums, but the one work around I've seen (saving from a regular page item https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/305405/#Comment_305405 ) doesn't work for me.
I've worked through the translator trouble shooting steps ( https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues ), with no luck. I've updated Zotero, the Zotero connector and Firefox to the versions below (latest version as of 1st August 2018). I've disabled all other extensions in firefox (I only had "easy screenshot" installed). I've also disabled Better Bib(La)Tex, and restarted Zotero. I've checked that Firefox is allowing all cookies, and I've reset the translators in both the Zotero conector and the Zotero application. I've started the Zotero application before trying to use the Zotero Connector button in firefox.
Vesion information:
Zotero: 5.0.54
Zotero Connector: 5.0.40
Firefox: 61.0.1 (64bit), on Windows 10 (1703).
For the debug logs, I'm replicating the issue with the link suggested in the comment linked above:
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8330056/
The debug IDs are:
Zotero Connector: D1847607431
Zotero Application: D1737052796
Steps:
(1) I've enabled and cleared the debug log in both Zotero and the connector.
(2) I've opened a new tab and pasted the above IEEE Xplore URL.
(3) Zotero has intercepted the URL, and redirected via my instituitonal proxy. The URL I see is https://ieeexplore-ieee-org.proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/document/8330056/
(4) I've hovered the mouse cursor over the Zotero button in firefox. The Icon is a white sheet of paper with lines on it (no PDF icons or symbols). The tooltip text says "Save to Zotero (IEEE Xplore)". Once clicked, the little popup shows Zotero is saving the meta data and the page, but doesn't show a PDF/full text entry like it normally would.
In the Connector debug logs I see a lot of entries saying "[JavaScript Error: "Frame not found, or missing host permission" {file: "undefined"}]". I also saw a few javacript XML errors in the debug log for the Zotero Application.
Notes:
- At the very top of the page, Zotero displays its yellow bar saying it redirected to the proxy. Just under this, the IEEE site have their own horizontal bar saying: "Special Notice
Saved search alerts are currently unavailable. Emails will resume on Wednesday, August 8. All other content alert types will be sent as scheduled.". I don't know if that has any bearing on the state of the IEEE site (maybe they did something or are in the midst of updating their site).
- Right clicking the "Download PDF" button on the IEEE page, then selecting "Zotero Connector --> Save to Zotero" does nothing. The link under this button is https://ieeexplore-ieee-org.proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=8330056
- After clicking the "Download PDF" Button, the PDF loads in the same tab in firefox (I think this is inside Firefox's default PDF.js viewer). While the PDF is loading, but not completely loaded, the Zotero button shows a PDF icon and the test saying to save the PDF file. After the PDF file has loaded, the Zotero button reverts to the previous icon (white sheet of paper with lines) and says "Save to Zotero (IEEE Xplore)" in the tool tip. I've captured the Zotero Connector activity during the PDF load here: Debug ID D705562420
When saving the PDF file (that's open inside firefox), there is no option to download or save to Zotero. I recall that was once an option in older versions (e.g. Zotero 4). The best work around I have is to save the PDF file (e.g. to the desktop), then drag and drop it into Zotero. Once dragged in and added to the article's entry, I can rename the file name based on the meta-data, and the PDF file is copied to Zotero's internal folders (the same place it would have gone if the translator downloaded it directly).
I'll make do with this slower work around for the time being.
Let me know if there is any more information I can gather or steps I should try.
Thanks,
Gabriel

The problem is because of this ?
did you solved it?
this is really not nice and makes me stressed!!!!!
thanks
Sciencedirect would be an entirely separate problem (that we're not aware of if it is indeed a general problem), so please provide a full set of troubleshooting information in a new thread on that: https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues

Great work adamsmith, thanks for your efforts!
Kind regards,

Thanks a lot,

I have been having the same issue for a while, with some of my colleagues. Unfortunately, updated translators does not fix the issue. I get the following error whenever I try to save:
[JavaScript Error: "HTTP request to https://ieeexplore-ieee-org-s-docadis-ups-tlse-fr.s.docadis.ups-tlse.fr/xpls/abs_all.jsp?arnumber=6697669 rejected with status 0"]
Zotero extension icon is white and states "Save to Zotero IEEE Xplore".
Any hints on how to fix this?
Thank you
@adonix Zotero devs will want a debug ID for saving that item from the Chrome connector: https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output#zotero_connectors_firefox_chrome_and_safari
* D2086826511 : at paper page, before opening the PDF (https://ieeexplore-ieee-org-s.docadis.ups-tlse.fr/document/6697669/)
* D1474540677 : after opening the PDF (https://ieeexplore-ieee-org-s.docadis.ups-tlse.fr/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=6697669)
In both cases, I pressed Zotero's button which detected that it was an IEEE Xplore paper.
Thanks
Before, we could access via https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/. We now need to do it via https://ieeexplore-ieee-org-s.docadis.ups-tlse.fr/document/. FYI, using first address, Zotero can download the abstract (no access to PDF due to license).
