Help referencing when text copied from old to new document

Hello. I have a very long text with references that I am trying to copy and paste into separate documents by chapter. When I do so, Zotero no longer recognises the citations. When I try to insert bibliography, a dialogue box says to first enter a citation. The document is full of citations. Any advice most appreciated. Thank you. Rebecca

    Be sure that you are not pasting as “text only”. What program are you using, Word or LibreOffice?

    You need to first set a citation style in the target document, e.g. by using "Document Preferences"

    I was able to solve the problem by saving the document (in Word) as a new document (and deleting what was not needed), rather than copying and pasting text from one document to another.
