How do I change inaccurate but remembered items (e.g., publisher, author names)

When I manually add an item, for example, logging in the name of an author, place, publication, or publisher, Zotero automatically suggests names that I have previously stored. This is a great feature; however, many of the names that I manually logged in before were inaccurate. Is there any way for me to find where the names are stored and make changes?

Many thanks!

    I just did this recently:
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/73007/cleanup-names-of-creators-publishers-cities-etc

The options are somewhat limited for some fields, but almost everything will export as a CSV file you can open in Excel and then sort (and remove duplicates), in order to "proofread" all of your items, especially looking for similar items. Once sorted (and duplicates removed) you'll find any typos or variants of the same name by skimming through.

The autofill entries are generally populated directly by the database, so if you have a typo (or anything else you don't want) that means it is stored somewhere in your data.* In that case, you can search for it and manually correct all entries, because batch editing is not yet available (but a planned feature coming soon). (Creative use of advanced search, saved searches, and temporary collections copying items can help.)

*Note/hint: the entire database is used, not just the current collection. So from personal experience if you have any additional collections that might not have as carefully updated data, it could be coming from there.

These things (and some limited exceptions, I think?) are discussed in a number of threads around here, such as: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/306541
  • Thanks a lot! The steps are extremely clear and helpful. Will try as suggested. ;)
