problems with saving NYTimes articles

Hia again Dan,

This is a more comprehensive story of my problem.

I am searching some articles from NYT. I am very new in using Z so I don't know much about how it works. However, when I got a list of articles from the NYT search, I started to save them in Z.

There were two problems: first, Z did not recognize all the articles (ten per page), but normally from six to nine of them. So I had to save manually those which were missing to Z. It worked alright, but after those individual saves, there was the other problem: I could not save anything anymore. Z worked similarly; let me to choose the (six to nine) articles to save, but then did not save them (the little box appears in the low-right corner, with nothing inside it, and then it disappears). Did not even give a notice on that error.

Only then, when I deleted those individually saved, Z would work again normally, so that I could save those (six to nine) articles from my search.

So, first - Z does not recognice all the articles from a NYT search (which btw were normally from the opinion -forum of NYT). Second, after saving separately these malfunctioning articles to Z, it stops working.

Hope this clarified my problem, if not, just ask again ^^

Hoping to be able to use Z a lot!
  • Hi again,

Still something more. In fact, it seems that only the articles in sections "LETTER", "Inside times", "Today in Business", and "corrections" do not appear in the list. The LETTER -section could be good to add there, others mentioned not really. There were some individual articles not belonging to these sections, which did not appear, but they were very few.

But one thing more: Z lets me to save same pages many times (at least if the articles comes from to different searches), which is not very conventional, I think.

But, well, otherwise working quite marvellously! Thanks!
  • Still one thing:

In fact, the old articles (older than 2005) do not really work at all.. not even when I tried to save using right-click..

I am using Mac OS X, btw.

Is there something to be done in order to get the older articles to Zotero?

    Thanks!
  • Do you have example URIs of and/or a specific recipe to find articles that do not get imported into Zotero?
  • Well, almost all the Letter -forums (or to Editor) for example the first one in the search:

    http://query.nytimes.com/search/query?frow=0&n=10&srcht=s&query=+Alternative+Fuel%3A+As+Rare+as+a+Fossil&srchst=nyt&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=sub&hdlquery=&bylquery=&daterange=full&mon1=01&day1=01&year1=1981&mon2=05&day2=22&year2=2009

It does not come to the list of articles to save and I cannot save it even manually (by using right-click).

Other thing is that the older articles cannot be saved, for example with search:

    http://query.nytimes.com/search/query?frow=0&n=10&srcht=a&query=ethanol&srchst=nyt&submit.x=8&submit.y=7&submit=sub&hdlquery=&bylquery=&daterange=period&mon1=01&day1=01&year1=1989&mon2=05&day2=22&year2=1989

Even if four articles of the five appear in the list, they are not saved when tried. Again, I cannot save them even manually to Zotero.

I think that NYT articles only from starting about 2005 work in Zotero.. would be nice if Zotero would work for much more to past..

But thanks for efforts to develop the tool!!
  • OK - I can see what's going on - for some reason the articles that are not working have a "query.nytimes.com/..." type URL, which doesn't work with the translator.

Something else seems to go on with the older articles - not sure.

"Duplicate Detection" (i.e. preventing you from saving the same thing many times) is a planned feature that is, as I understand, very close to being implemented.
