In-text citation errors on Word for Mac

I have had a few errors on my in-text citations in Word for Mac. It will repeat number or show multiple different numbers and not refresh. When I'm tracking changes, it will insert a long string of code when I try to accept changes. This is the most updated version of Word 16.15 on a Macbook Pro. Has anyone had this issue?
  • In Zotero Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processors reinstall the Word plugin. You will need to completely remove and reinsert the problematic citations. This is due to the changes in Word 16.9, which introduced bugs with Zotero integration. For most users the Zotero Word plugin updates automatically, but due to certain user workflows (such as changing profiles), it didn't for everyone.
  • I am having this same issue with the numbers repeating after I insert a new citation or when I refresh. I just inserted a citation into my first sentence and it incremented then repeated every citation.

I also have Word for Mac v16.15. I've reinstalled the Word Plugins and removed and reinserted the citations multiple times. Is there another solution?
  • @mchau does it occur in a new document?
  • @adomasven it doesn't seem to be occurring in other documents. i've only tested one other since i've started having the problem. and the document i'm working on is from an older version of Word that i've since saved as to a newer version.
  • Does it occur in a new document? Could you describe the steps to reproduce the bug in a new document and what exactly do you see that is wrong?
  • So yes it's happening in new documents as well. Here's what I did. I copy and pasted 4 sentences of lorem ipsum text, inserted two citations at the end of the last two sentences, then inserted a citation at the end of the first sentence and this is the outcome... it adds and increments the citation numbers for the last two sentences... it should be 1 2 3 not 1 12 23. i'm using vancouver superscript style:

  • Have you tried reinstalling the plugin from Zotero Preferences -> Cite -> Word Processors? If that doesn't fix it (test in a new doc first), then try manual word plugin installation
  • Also having this problem. The citations keep repeating. I now have 7 repeats on the citations! Have tried adomasven's tips. Have upgraded to the Zotero 5.054. Have reinstalled the plugin. I'm using Word for Mac 16.14.1

    Anyone solved this yet?
  • new documents seem to be okay for me now after upgrading zotero and reinstalling the plugin a couple of times. i have zotero 5.054 and word for mac 16.15.

it was still happening in an old document even if i copied to a new file. basically i had to redo all the references and it seems ok now. but before i replaced them, i had to take my text and copy and paste it into a plain text editor to get rid of all the field codes i couldn't see and then i put it into a new doc. so far so good.
  • Oh eek, that sounds like a nightmare. I'm going to hold out and hope the there is a bug fix released before i have to submit my paper!
  • @Jessbrennan there will not be a bug fix, since this was an issue introduced by Word, and technically Word is producing corrupt documents when using their programming interface in a legitimate way, which we had to work around. You will have to reinsert the problematic citations. Make sure you remove one additional character surrounding the problematic citation text to fully delete the underlying broken field codes.
