After supra note the footnote numbers don't go consequently

Hello,
I added some supra note to my citings. All of a sudden the footnote number is went down from 20 to 10 rather than 21, 22 etc. I called Microsoft and they were on the phone with me the entire night. They couldn't fix it. May you please help? I have a paper due for the weekend. I was using Bluebook law style 2.
  • Zotero has no influence on footnote numbers, sorry. Those are handle entirely in Word. All Zotero does is send an "insert footnote here" command to Word.
There are a host of troubleshooting posts online for footnote numbering gone awry in Word, though -- likely more helpful than MS support.
  • Check in your footnotes settings to see if it is set to "Continuous" (References -> Footnotes -> click on the little expansion button in the bottom right corner) AND the "Start at" option is set to 1 rather than another random number AND the Apply changes is set to "Whole document". I also heard that sometimes, using Track Changes in Word or editing the document in other softwares (OpenOffice for example) and then come back to Word can mess up the footnotes numbering. If you do a lot of copying and pasting, it's worth checking the formatting by turning on the paragraph marks to see if you accidentally leave any section breaks that can mess up the number order (especially if the numbering setting is set to "Each Section" rather than "Continuous").

If all fails and your document isn't that large (let's say under 20 footnotes or so), you can either recreate all the footnotes from scratch in a new document file, using the same software OR
manually change the number order yourself by typing the new number in. ONLY do this on your final draft because if you need to add/remove footnotes, all the subsequent ones will have to be changed manually!
