where is the item key in the desktop app?

If I have an item from my library, say https://www.zotero.org/davidbenque/items/itemKey/FVW6256M is there an easy way to copy the 'FVW6256M' in the desktop app?

There are a couple of options, but the easiest is probably to install the Zutilo add-on, which has a "Copy Zotero URI" option that you can make available via keyboard shortcut or right-click menu: https://github.com/willsALMANJ/Zutilo/releases
