Syncing issues across 2 computers with dropbox - setting up base directory?

edited July 8, 2018
Hi, I access my references via links to dropbox across 2 computers. I regularly get "attached file could not be found" error messages. I think it's something obvious in how . I can clearly see based on the file paths why it only links properly on computer B so I'm guessing it's how I've set up my base directory. Thanks for any advice. Set up below:

ComputerA personal computer
Base directory:

C:\Users\ComputerA\Dropbox (Personal)\PhD readings\ZoteroLib

ComputerB University computer
Base directory: C:\Users\ComputerB\Dropbox (Univ Staff)\PhD readings\ZoteroLib

And when clicking on the broken link:

ComputerA File path (doesn't work):
C:\Users\ComputerB\Dropbox (Personal)\PhD readings\ZoteroLib\Hsieh and Shannon - 2005 - Three Approaches to Qualitative Content Analysis.pdf

ComputerB file path (works):
C:\Users\ComputerB\Dropbox (Personal)\PhD readings\ZoteroLib\Hsieh and Shannon - 2005 - Three Approaches to Qualitative Content Analysis.pdf
  • When you refer to the path being used on Computer A, are you determining that from debug output?

I'm a bit confused by your example, since you refer to both "Dropbox (Univ Staff)" and "Dropbox (Personal)" on your work computer.

But basically, if you're trying to open something on Computer A and it's using a path from Computer B, it means that the attachment still has the absolute path. That will be the case if the file exists outside the base directory on Computer B or if you haven't synced since setting the base directory (which changes all attachments below that base directory to relative paths).
  • Thanks for the response.

I started replying to your comments before I found an at least partial fix --

I've had a play, rechosen base directories... it's fixed some links not others (but enough to correct those by hand). If I knew what worked I'd share some troubleshooting for others!
