unable to sync - safari

Zotero is suddenly refusing to sync from my Mac to the web-based version (and vice versa). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the version on my Mac, but it hasn't made any difference. I've been using Zotero successfully for over 4 years. Recently I was getting a message about updating something in safari preferences, I think it was something about api.zotero, but I didn't look too closely. I think it's stopped being able to sync since I accepted the update. Any ideas?
  • Have you installed the actual Zotero desktop app?
    https://zotero.org/download

The Safari Connector is just a small extension to connect Safari to the Zotero app or the zotero.org server. What specific version of macOS and Safari are you running, and what is the exact error message?
  • I’ve worked out it’s kaspersky that’s stopping it. If I disable kaspersky it syncs fine but I shouldn’t have to do that every time!
  • What is the exact error message you get when you have kaspersky enabled?
  • SSL certificate error connecting to api.zotero.org

    Helpful!

  • If I follow the zotero help instructions and look at the certificate and the common name it shows: Kaspersky Web Anti-Virus Certification Authority

    See here:

It's likely that Kaspersky is interepting SSL traffic, which is terrible practice and should not be done. What does it say when you view the certificate at api.zotero.org? https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/site_certificate_info

It's likely that Kaspersky is intercepting HTTPS traffic, which is a terrible practice that is unfortunately common among some security softwares. If so, you should disable that SSL/TLS/HTTPS-scanning feature.
  • Those instructions have all you need to know. Generally I think it's a bad idea to have your antivirus software take over all SSL certificate handling in your browser, thus disabling crucial security features, so I'd recommend checking how to disable that particular feature of Kaspersky, but if you want to keep it, follow the instructions of getting the certificate into Zotero.
