Looked at the instructions https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/63880/linux-installation-instructions-for-standalone and it has a zotero.desktop file but is this for unity?
I am using Ubuntu but KDE (not Kubuntu). I put it in my /opt/ folder. How do I get a launcher item? How do I update it since it's a tarball?

or unpack/install Zotero somewhere in your home directory and then update via the Tools menu.
