Problems/questions

First time user here. Great idea, great potential!
Unfortunately so far I can't seem to get it to work properly. Here's a quick rundown:

- Couldn't figure out how to insert references into the text (e.g. (Smith, 2004) ) ... I found a similar question in the forums, and the answer was to look for a key binding to copy a reference instead of a citation. Looking (and trying) 1.5 keybindings I couldn't find one that would do that - both of them copied full citation into the clipboard.

The key function is obviously compiling the reference list based on the citations within the text, and moving between different citation/reference formats. This obviously depends on the editor being used. I haven't tried the office plugin, but it would be great to have Google Docs support (I understand that it may not entirely depend on you).

- Importing citations. Searched pubmed (both proxied and non-proxied version) - no Zotero icons appeared in the URL line, and I couldn't find any other quick way of transfering that info (being able, for instance just paste whole bibtex block somewhere would be nice for cases like that)

Google scholar search did result in Zotero icon, however after selecting the appropriate items from the list it reported an error and import failed (here's the search URL: http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&lr=&q=Genome-wide+maps+of+chromatin+state+in+pluripotent+and+lineage-committed+cells&btnG=Search)

Going all the way into the journal (both proxied and not) resulted in "embedded PDF" icon being shown, but it too failed on import.

- Too bad PDF highlighting doesn't work (would've been a killer feature for me). But since I have to use Acrobat for that, how can one update the attached PDF file? I could only find a way to delete it and create it again.

But thanks for working on this - just a bit more and I'll be able to keep my PDF library online, unchain myself from the antiquated EndNote.
  • for troubleshooting - what OS are you using?

@1: you can cite in the text (without using the word/Ooo plugin) by holding down a key while draging the citation to the spot you want it- the key varies by OS I think: it's shift on Linux, but it might be command, control, option or alt on Win or Mac, I forgot.

I think support for most other word processors is very unlikely to happen - but as a workaround I would suggest using the collection feature: Every time you insert a citation you also move it into the collection "New Article X" (or whatever you want to call it). Once you are done writing you can then just generate the bibliography. from all the items in that collection.
Because of how collections work they will also stay in their "original" collection.

@2: I have no trouble importing from the google scholar search results you cite and I do see an icon and can import in pubmed (no proxy)
Maybe have a look at the troubleshooting guide:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
especially with respect to conflicting extensions
if problem persist, generate an error report (in the gear menu) and then post the error ID here.

@3: if you highlight in Acrobat on the file that you've saved to or linked to from Zotero, highlights and comments will just be there - Zotero just opens the file on the location it's saved to. PDF highlighting is very unlikely to appear in any reasonable feature - the problem is that there is no open source tool that is even close to providing that possibility - this would work only for macs, where OS X deals with pdfs in a more elegant way - this is one feature where papers will eventually be superior to Zotero.
  • Hi,

Hold the shift key with a mac, then drag the record over to your Word or OO document. Makes a nifty citation.

    Cheers.
