Add-in keeps MS-Word from starting

I've been using the add-in for years, but now when Word 2016 starts, it never gets past the startup screen. Remove the Zotero add-in, and everything comes up just fine. Except, of course, I don't have Zotero in Word anymore. Help?
  • How are you removing the Zotero add-in?
  • By deleting the Startup folder in C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word
    Nothing within Word itself worked
  • I should say that it has been slow to open for several weeks now. Just today Word won't open at all with the add-in.
  • Would like to try "Simon's build" but don't understand how to install it. I have the zip file and I know where the Zotero folder is in Windows. Now what?
  • That should really have no effect on whether it works. The Zotero.dotm file is very bare-bones and Simon's build is meant to address crashing during operation, not on startup. Have you tried removing Normal.dotm and then adding back Zotero.dotm into the startup folder?

Another thing to try is to try to open Zotero.dotm directly with Word and seeing whether that works at all.
  • When I tried to open Zotero.dotm, I get the message "Macros in this document have been disabled by your enterprise administrator for security reasons." In Word, I went to Files/Options/Trust Center/Settings and chose 'Disable all macros except digitally signed macros'. Fixed.

    Thanks for the help.
  • So that worked on campus, but I needed to make a handful of other changes within Trust Center to get it to work off campus. Before making these changes, I noticed that if I disconnected from the internet altogether, Word opened fine.
  • In the end, this was not a problem with Zotero so much as macros in general. The only full resolution was the use of a VPN, which gives Word access to something that had been blocked off-campus. Could be something with OneDrive. Our ITS isn't sure.
