Question about formating 'cite while you write' in Word 2010

Hi there,

I wonder if someone can help me. I'm trying to use Zotero 'cite while you write' under the formating of 'World Psychiatry' and I have two issues:
1. the citing number does not come up accurately i.e. it should be [1] and infact just comes up as a foodnote smaller '1'.
2. the reference does not appear at the end like it does when using endnote.

I just wondered if you knew why I am experiencing these issues?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

All the best,

Liz
  • 1. Would be an error in the style -- we'll look at that and fix it (assuming you're right).

    2. Use "Insert Bibliography"
  • I can't work out how to use 'insert bibliography' to rectify this, how would I edit the smaller 1?

    Cheers.
  • Place your cursor where you want the Bibliogrpahy and click the Add/Edit Bibliography button in the Zotero tab. It will insert the bibliography there.
  • Thanks for your help, I understand that I can edit the bibliography but don't understand how to edit the World Psychiatry style from (small '1') to the correct formatting of: '[1]'. The reference is also missing at the end.
  • Like adamsmith said, that would be an error in the style—one of the volunteers will look into that.

I’m not sure what you mean by “The reference is also missing at the end.”
  • I can see that he said that, but it wasn't clear whether I could do anything to change it myself, like edit the style so that it's correct. He just said 'use 'insert bibliography'

Re 'the reference is also missing at the end': When you use cite while you write, you put in a reference citation e.g. [1] and then a list of the full reference appears at the end. Could you advise me on whether this is possible in zotero?
  • You asked two different questions, I gave entirely separate answers (hence the numbers).

The answer to the first question, [1] vs 1, was that we'll look at a fix -- I've now have a quick look and I'm seeing no indication in the author guidelines on how to cite in text and superscripted numbers in recently published articles. Why do you think this should be [1]?

The answer to the second question -- why is there no reference list -- is that you need to insert it by clicking the Add/Edit Bibliography button (it will then update automatically as you cite).
  • Here's an example of something else published in the world psychiatry journal, here you will find an example of how the journal requires references to be formatted:
    http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wps.20440/full

This works fine on endnote and not on zotero, and so you don't have to just rely on the assumption that I am right, which you seem a bit averse to, but also that endnote are right too.

Thank you also for answering my question.

  • I absolutely don't care about being right, but I'm not just going to assume you're right (or that the Endnote style is) and I want to make sure we get this right for the journal.

For the article you link to, if you look at the PDF, i.e. the actual print version, you'll see citations in superscript. The HTML view will often look differently. This is also in line with the AMA style the journal follows otherwise. Absent explicit guidance to the contrary from the journal's editors, I think our current style is correct.
  • I'm sure you don't, I just think you maybe could have phrased that a little better.

Yes, although it's a little curious that endnote is also in the html version.
  • Not really -- just like Zotero, Endnote has thousands of styles. Some are bound to be wrong or outdated.

Not sure what about my phrasing was wrong, but I'm sorry if it came across wrong. You can click on my username to see how many posts I write -- while I do try to be polite, I simply don't have the time to think a lot about nuances of phrasing.

I think you've been dismissive rather than ignored nuance.
  • I'm sorry you feel that way. It wasn't my intention nor do I see any sign of that reading back. See https://www.zotero.org/support/forum_guidelines#etiquette
