Bibtex - Cleanup?

Hello everyone,

I'm a bit new at this but I found no information or discussion about the issue of removing for instance non-breaking spaces from export to bibtex. This may be sensible for other export filters too.

Also, what about putting the name of authors in what appears to be the bibtex legacy order:
Von LastName, FirstName Jr

I gather that distinguishing Jr and Von part is not that easy, but the other distinctions seems simple.

    Can you please provide a concrete example? AFAIK, non-breaking spaces should only be used when you have a non-breaking space in the Zotero database. Maintaining these is probably desirable.

    The non-breaking space between the initials stems from the reference, but I prefer it gone. It might interfere with bibtex. Also, I just found that an umlaut from the abstract isn't carried over acceptably either. Or is this a problem with my encoding? So far, no combination of website encoding and export encoding did the trick.

    IMHO, this has absolutely nothing to do with BibTeX output, then.

    The real problem is that Wiley's export is fairly poor. If you really want to shift the buck to Zotero, the issue is that the Wiley InterScience translator doesn't work around some eccentricities with that site. Wiley encodes non-breaking spaces in the author names on that site. It is probably fine for Zotero to replace those in the author field only, but all reference managers would run into this issue.

    I don't know if there is a standard character encoding for the format used here. Wiley is using windows-1252 (as I think they should); Zotero UTF-8. I didn't check to see how Wiley was serving their files (I seem to recall a past thread indicating that they mis-identified the files as UTF-8). Both parties could probably be a bet smarter here...
