Following instructions does not work on this "upgrade"

edited November 17, 2017
I have downloaded both Zotero Connector and Zotero 5.0 for Windows on this webpage https://www.zotero.org/download/ but can neither see the zotero library pane nor save citation onto my zotero library. The zotero buttons in my word document no longer work. I have been directed to this page https://www.zotero.org/blog/zotero-5-and-firefox-faq/ which says the following which I cannot comprehend:

"Where did the Z button in the Firefox toolbar go? How can I open Zotero without it?
Instead of clicking a Z button in the Firefox toolbar, you now switch to Zotero as you would any other program. (See Switching Between Programs for tips on doing this efficiently. Short version: Use the dock/taskbar/launcher or Cmd-Tab/Alt-Tab. Don’t waste time minimizing or moving windows to access what’s behind.)

You can also arrange your windows so that Zotero is visible while you’re browsing."

DOES THIS IN FACT MEAN THAT WE SHOULD LOG ON TO ZOTERO SITE AND THEN VIEW OUR LIBRARY DIRECTLY?

"What about the “Save to Zotero” button?

The button still exists in the browser toolbar, and, as before, it will show you an icon representing the data Zotero detected on the page: webpage, journal article, newspaper article, etc.

If you don’t see the icon, check your browser’s extensions pane to make sure you have the Zotero Connector installed. In some cases, the button may appear in the overflow panel accessible from the right edge of the toolbar."

ALL THAT I SEE IS AN ICON ON THE TOP RIGHT HAND CORNER SAYING SAVE TO ZOTERO (WEBPAGE WITH SNAPSHOT). BUT WHEN I CLICK ON IT, THE RECORD DOES NOT IN FACT GET SAVED INTO ZOTERO (I JUST CHECKED IN MY ZOTERO LIBRARY). I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS MEANT BY "BROWSER'S EXTENSIONS PANE" OR "OVERFLOW PANEL"

My librarian told me to download Zotero Standalone - but there is simply no such thing to be downloaded on https://www.zotero.org/download/

If anyone can just direct me to a simple step by step guide that actually works, I would be very grateful.
  • Zotero Standalone = Zotero for (Mac/Windows/Linux) as listed on the left on https://www.zotero.org/download/ (this used to be referred to as Standalone when there was still a browser-only version)

Download and install that. That's what all the rest of the documentation refers to, not the online library.
  • I'm disgusted. Where's the zotero citation button and the zotero library pane? It doesn't make sense to have to jump back and forth to a standalone window...
  • @dstillman. Thank you, but I have read this. Where's the button? It's not clear if the button has been discontinued or not. It's also not clear how to use Zotero with the split screen any longer.
  • That's explained in the linked page.
  • It's not working. Can you please explain how this is done. There's no youtube video or anything...
  • The explanation is not clear. I use Firefox, on a mac computer.

    It's not working.
  • I took all the steps (BTW), and nothing is working. Please advise. I tell everyone how glorious Zotero is. I can no longer recommend this product -- not only because of the change, but more so because of the poor customer service I am receiving right now. There's no one to call and no response from this thread other than an unhelpful link. Super frustrating.
  • Dstillman. I see you have not responded. Cool. and "Okay."
  • There's nothing you've asked so far that's not explicitly addressed in the page I linked to, which includes the questions "Where did the Z button in the Firefox toolbar go? How can I open Zotero without it?" and "How can I choose what collection to save to?".

If there's something you still don't understand, you'll need to quote from the linked page and say what you don't understand about it. Just repeatedly saying "It's not working" gives us no way to help you.

But let's continue this in your other thread.
