Light sensitive dyslexia - Difficulty reading on white screen - How to change UI background color

Hi,
I am new to Zotero and have the issue above would greatly appreciate if anyone could let me know if there is a way to change the background color of the Zotero UI on all 3 panels from white to a more neutral color in the same way MS Word can change using the Design-Page Color option
Thanks in advance
  • You can set arbitrary CSS for the Zotero interface by creating a 'chrome' folder in your Zotero profile directory and adding a userChrome.css file. But to do it properly one would need to build the client and inspect the XUL in the dev tools, try different CSS rules for various backgrounds and text, etc.

I'd recommend looking to your OS's accessibility features (or perhaps a third-party tool) for this. E.g., on macOS you can use Invert Colors to flip the colors across the whole OS, including temporarily with a keyboard shortcut. There's no real reason this should need to be done on a program-by-program basis.
  • Thanks dstillman

You can invert colors to on Windows also - its a disability function - but a black screen makes file management impossible
I have a third party tool 't-bar FX software' that sets a different color on a screen but its only suitable for reading as you cant type under it
Most windows programs files allow the screen color to be changed except file manager
Could you please advise re: "set arbitrary CSS for the Zotero interface by creating a 'chrome' folder in your Zotero profile directory and and adding a userChrome.css file"
Do you know where I can get step by step or Youtube showing how as I've looked and cant find
    Best regards form
    An Old Sod

  • No, sorry, I'm afraid this would need to be tailored to the internals of Zotero's user interface, so if you can't find a more general solution you'd need to find someone (e.g., a web developer) to help you with the above steps.
