Debug ID : D1863921719 : Installation of Zotero 5.0 with Windows 7

Hello, I installed Zotero 5.0 under Windows 7. I have this error message when opening Zotero Standalone.
Error: 'fieldMode' cannot be 1 with 'firstName' property
Zotero.Creators</this.cleanData@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/data/creators.js:170:10
Zotero.Creators</this.init<@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/data/creators.js:38:28
From previous event:
ZoteroService@file:///D:/Zotero/components/zotero-service.js:346:4
@chrome://zotero/content/include.js:4:14

The connector for Firefox is "currently unavailable".
I have been working with Zotero Standalone on Windows 7 since 2014. I have a library of 5500 references. Please, can you help me ?
Christine
  • We'll look into that, but in the meantime you can see if running your database through the DB Repair Tool helps.
  • Thank you, I have not loaded my database into Zotero 5.0 yet. I made a copy of the data directory (containing zotero.sqlite), then I uninstalled Zotero Santalone 4 and installed Zotero Santalone 5.0.
I found that commenting line 30 of the file component\zotero-service.js : /*const Cc = Components.classes;*/ the error message disappears and I can open Zotero standalone. However, Zotero seems incomplete. I can not create anything manually (notice, collection ...)
  • Yeah, that's not something you want to do. But again, you can see if the repair tool fixes your database.
  • OK, I don't think the repair tool would've fixed this, but this should now be fixed in the latest 5.0 Beta. You can install that over your current version, start Zotero (which should automatically repair your database), and then, if it's working, reinstall the regular version from the download page.
  • To answer on "you can see if your database through the DB Repair Tool helps", I was about to do it and I found that I did not have Zotero data subdirectory or zotero.sqlite file in my Zotero 5.0 directory.
List of directories I can see : chrome, components, defaults, dictionnaries, extensions, fonts, gmp-clearkey, uninstall.
I Redid the installation from the www.zotero.org/download/ site. No change.
  • you're looking in the Profile directory, not the data directory. But anyway -- you should install the Beta version Dan links to above.
  • I installed the beta version on the current version. It does not change anything.
  • meaning you still get the same Error: 'fieldMode' cannot be 1 with 'firstName' property ?
  • Can you copy and paste the full error again from the current version?
  • Hello,
The complete error message is :
Une erreur s'est produite lors du démarrage de Zotero.
Error: 'fieldMode' cannot be 1 with 'firstName' property
    Zotero.Creators</this.cleanData@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/data/creators.js:187:10
    Zotero.Creators</this.init<@chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/data/creators.js:40:29
    From previous event:
    ZoteroService@file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Zotero/components/zotero-service.js:346:4
    @chrome://zotero/content/include.js:4:14
Then 2 buttons : Rechercher les mises à jour / quitter

OK, so to confirm, if you check your database integrity from the Advanced → Files and Folders pane of the Zotero preferences (if you can still access the preferences despite the error), does it say that no errors were found?
  • 1 / With the error message when launching Zotero: the library home screen is gray. I do not have access to anything.
2 / Commenting the line / * const Cc = Components.classes; * / of the file zotero-service.js, I access the library without an error message but the tool menu does not contain "preferences".
3 / The opening of preferences by the Firefox connector is impossible.
    Is there another way?

"Preferences" is in the Edit menu, but if you're commenting out lines in zotero-service.js, they probably won't work right.
  • I'd recommend trying the DB Repair Tool. In 5.0, your database should be in C:\Users\:username:\Zotero, not the profile directory.
  • Sorry, things have changed places. So I clicked on preferences but nothing happens.
  • Yeah, so try the DB Repair Tool if you can. If the repaired file doesn't help, let us know the Upload ID.
  • It's good, I found the Database. I launched the DB Repair.
    :-)
  • Actually, I think I know what's going on here — I don't think the repair tool will fix it. I'll have a fix for you soon.
  • I made the replacement of the original zotero.sqlite file with the file obtained on DB Repair. I restarted Zotero and the error message is still there. The Upload ID is 5a0e911c20b9f.
I have to go to work soon. I must give a Zotero training this afternoon.
    :-) again.
    Have a good day.

OK, this should be fixed in the latest beta. (And again, once it's fixed you can switch back to the regular version.)
  • I just installed the new version (beta then regular).
Wonderful, everything works very well and I found my 8200 references !!
    Thank you for your help.
    Christine
