Zotero 5.0 installation won't finish

On my Dell Precision 3510 laptop running Windows 10, every time I try to install Zotero, the installation gets to about 10% complete and just sits there for hours until I manually stop the task. I'm using Zotero-5.0.24_setup.exe. The progress bar is below the "g" in "Installing Zotero..." when the installation stops. No error message is produced. I'm doing a standard installation, nothing custom. A large number of files are placed into the Zotero program folder. I am able to install other software on this machine.

The one weird thing that happens before that is that the install thinks it is an Upgrade even though I've never installed any version of Zotero on this computer before. But I'm assuming that's because of all the previous failed installs that all got hung up at the same place.

Any tips? Has anyone else had this problem? I didn't see anything in the forums.
  • It's worth doing some basic troubleshooting steps: uninstalling Zotero from Windows via the uninstall programs app, if that's possible, redownloading the setup file (perhaps with a different browser) and trying again.
  • Thanks for the quick reply. I did try those steps. No luck.

Uninstallation wasn't available via the Windows add/remove programs tool, perhaps because the install didn't make it far enough, but there was a file called helper.exe in the .../Zotero/unistall/ folder that did the uninstallation. Anyway, the result was the same: stalled installation at ~10% complete.

I've been using Zotero for 5 or 6 years and have a pretty large library built up, so would be a bummer not to be able to use it.

    Any other ideas?

Possible it's this (which is off by default, as far as we know):

  • Thanks. That security setting is not visible to me - I'm assuming it's blocked by my institution. (And who knows what else they're doing that could be contributing.) I am going to see my IT people and will suggest this. I'll report back.
  • Just to follow up: One of my institution's IT guys was able to install Zotero 5.0 and it seems to be working. As far as he and I could tell, he didn't do anything differently from me except using a different way of accessing of "run as admin". So unfortunately the root problem still a mystery, but at least it's installed.

    Thanks for the help!
