Reference Formatting

How do you change the reference numbers appearing in the text to have parentheses around them?
  • It's set by the citation style -- which are you using, how exactly do you want the references to look?
  • I was using JAMA style. I was told: "Reference numbers in the text should appear in chronological order in normal type and in parentheses [e.g., “In the study by Norton et al. (23)...”]. "
  • For which journal is that? JAMA says specifically "In text, tables, and legends, identify references with superscript arabic numerals. "

But you could e.g. use the standard Vancouver style which uses numbers in parentheses.
  • Vancouver style is exactly what I needed. Thank you very much!
  • still curious -- which journal? Or is this for some other publication/paper?
  • This is for a paper I am helping edit for a faculty member.

I am editing another paper for a different faculty member. Can you tell me which style shows the references in brackets instead of "normal" parentheses?
  • @anuttall You will often find it easier to pick a style if you search for the specific journal title where the paper is intended to be submitted.
